my friends laptop's ati graphics adapter has died. loads of black vertical lines running up the screen, even through the toshiba boot up logo display.
i have disabled the ati adapter in the device manager and the laptop will boot, but the graphics are not looking the best.
basically i need to know if the spec says this:
    ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X700 16x PCI Express
does that mean that the adapter is not integrated on the system board and can be replaced separately, or does the whole system board need replacing?
i don't want to open it up, i case i can't get it back together again!
the laptop is a toshiba satellite m70 by the way.
bios, chipset and ati drivers updated, to no avail. cheers.

Have you tried the laptop with an external monitor to rule out the LCD panel itself. LCD panels tend to be worth more than the laptop once it's out of warranty, as in it's can be cheaper to buy the same spec laptop second hand than pay for a replacement one.

the PCI express refers to the chipset, not the physical configuration of soldered or slotted card.

thanks for the reply captain midnight.
i tried an external monitor. same prob, so it's defo the system board.
i assume toshiba will replace the system board under the 1 year standard parts warranty??

    hate that card :(

boot in vga mode, if it looks ok try 800x 600 setting and 64k colours

    reboot normal (with those settings)

if thats OK go to system control panel, hardware, device manager, right click on card in there, properties , driver,

can you roll back driver and reboot

now try 1024x 768 and reboot with 64k colours

now try 1024x 768 and true colour (millions) and reboot

what does or does not work
