I have an acer laptop with a Dvd rw drive. Recently it just stopped working, not reading any dvd's or cd's. As far as device manager is concerned it is working fine. Is there anything else i can do to make sure thats its not a physical hardware problem? Anyone have any ideas where i can get an cheap internal or external dvdrw drive?

How old is the laptop? Is the LED lit up at all when you insert a CD/DVD? Any noise at all out of it?

If you use it alot, the only thing I can think of is that the lens could need cleaning, not sure (as if it is trying to read and failing). Is the lappy under warranty?

not under warranty... its not used that much really. I could try to clean the lens and see if that works.

    Don't !
until you've ruled out other stuff,

try a bootable cd - like windows disk to rule out the operating system, if it don't boot from a bootable cd check the BIOS settings first to make sure it's actually trying.

try an audio CD, these run at 1X speed (it's true) an easy test

IIRC it can be that the slider the lens moves from the inside to the outside of the disk is more likely to be dirty that causes problems than the lens itself - some don't recomend using dvd cleaning disks on RW drives
