This is what comes up when I try to install the new iTunes. The Windows Installer box pops up briefly, followed by this. What the hell is going on? I've had lost of problems with Windows Installer recently, crap like this for instance. I don't have a clue how to fix it.

Login as the adminstrator in XP via Safe mode and set the permissions that allow you to install software for your logon name in Control Panel->User Accounts. Is there more than one account on this machine?

There are 5 accounts for each person in the family, and a 6th that I've never seen before - ASP.Net. Don't know what the hell it is and it doesn't show up on the login screen.

How do I log in via safe mode? Each account has administrator privliges btw, except that random one, which I have just deleted

Tap the F8 key at startup, select Safe Mode from the startup menu. It should bring you to the welcome screen and show Adminstrator from which you can login to. Should have asked, can you install anything else, or is it just the Windows Installers?

That ASP.net login would be created when you installed the .Net framework, for use with programming I believe and if you work on building applications, it won't do any harm to you.

It's hit and miss, some programs I can install, some (including iTunes repeatedly), I can't. I rebooted there in safe mode, but I couldn't find where or how to set the permissions?

The problems installing come hand in hand with Windows Instaler, it always pops up when something won't install.

    XP Home ,MCE or Pro?

Try re-installing the installer (see: microsoft.com)

Why didn't you post this in Windows? tut.

XP Pro, sorry didn't see it, should have. I've tried reinstalling the installer, but, lo and behold, windows installer doesn't let me!

EDIT: I was able to update Windows Installer 3.1, but it still doesn't work
