I only get the ones from Nigeria these days.
Have you ever followed through on these just to see how far they will go without the pertinent info they're phishing for?

    I did that one time.
I kept sending each new E-mail address they provided a message saying "Bring me my money! I'll meet you at the bank!"

And then they say "Oh, no, we cannot deliver the money. You must travel to claim it."

Then I said "Well, just send it to me."

And they said "We could do that, but you must arrange the shipment with courrier XXXX (No other courrier is acceptable) and insure the shipment for $3,500.00."

Then I said "Well, if I had $3,500 I'd be there in person. Just deduct it from my winnings and send the check."

Oh, no! They can't do that! They aren't allowed to tamper with the funds.

then I said "You have my written permission to tamper with it in order to send it to me."

And then they say "You must have an attorney notarize a drafted letter."

And I said "I am an attorney."

    Silence.

It was an amusing week's worth of E-mails.

    Thats a lot of reading!

I wonder how many people actually fall for these scams, they're so ridiculous I'd hope the number would be small but then again, theres an awful lot of stupid people out there..

Well they wouldn't keep sending them if they didn't have some sort of success. Shame really. I almost fell for a PayPal scam a few weeks a go, but to cut a long story short, I didn't.

isn't there some sort of game that people play, where they try and reverse scam the letter-writer.

e.g. getting them to send gifts etc

EDIT: here it is : called "scam-baiting"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scam_baiting

    v funny

I never get any of these 419s, I want to, because I'd love to bait.

I think my opening line would be "Wow, you've saved my life. I was planning on taking my own life within the hour, but with your financial assistance I won't need to. God bless you.

Before you start baiting these scammers you should really check out www.419eater.com for some helpful tips. It's always better to bait safe and it's quite an enjoyable hobby.

Respond to the scam in the OP. Say you saw it in your friends email address, and because you have banking experience, he wants you to manage the collection of his win from them!

Good idea. I'll do it tomorrow, though. I'm going to bed soon, up early in the morning to meet THE HOFF!
