On a multi-lane dual carriageway, let us say dual three lanes, car A is doing half the speed limit in lane 3. Car B is doing the speed limit in lane 1. The road is otherwise being lightly used. Can car B overtake car A on the left.

The answer is no. Overtaking on the left is only allowed under the following circumstances:
* traffic ahead is turning right
* you are turning left
* in slow moving traffic

The last reason is rather vague but taking it from a garda sargeant friend, if you are not in something like rush hour traffic then you are breaking the law.

The car in lane 3 should not be there. They should be in lane one as per the 'keep to the left' rule. Unfortunatley, car Bhas to slow down and wait for the numpty to pull left. However, in a situation like this, I believe that the gardai would take numpty to task rather then car B

Is this a riddle or a typo, cos I'm a little confused here?
How could Car A overtake Car B if he is going at half the speed of Car B!!??
And if he is in lane 1, it would mean him (Car A) crossing 3 lanes into the hard sholder to do the overtaking.

Then, 1 min later, you state that i am banned because i responded to what you actually wrote - be it in error or not!

I've never been banned before, so i don't know what happpens and i said i'd see what happens if i try to post...and it appears i'm not banned!

And i thought i was confused after the 1st post

That's what i thought. Nothing to indicate it's a joke - though if it is, it's an odd one. I suppose i have an odd sense of humour too.

Yes, an apparent ban seems to be the order of the day - if you're lucky.:D
I'd agree with you on the issue in question, though i'll never forget that idiot on the M50 in front of me in the fast lane doing 40mph (70 zone), and wouldn't move - not from lack of coaxing.
Everyone had to illegally "undertake" him in the end.

The newly expanded N7 is a joke. Loads of people cruising between 45-50MPH on the middle and right lanes with barely anyone on the left. Every day I drive on it, I wish I was a cop because I would easily hand out hundreds of points a day for people driving in the wrong lane.

Apologies. I got no sleep Friday night and some typing errors crept in. When I typed "Banned! ;" I mean to type "Banned! " (a wink) You are not banned. The only thing you have suffer from is sarchasm.
