Problem recording RTE - picture is squashed by DVD recorder

Anyone having problems recently recording from RTE1 (via NTL analog)?

My DVD recorder (Pioneer DVR-420) seems to detect something in the signal and thinks that it's a 4:3 picture that needs to be squashed down into 16:9 widescreen to be presented correctly.

But it isn't - it's a standard 14:9 compromise ratio picture and the squashing ruins it. Luckily my TV has some options to squeeze and stretch the picture is cases like these, but it shouldn't have to!

It's fine during the ad breaks, it only messes up during the actual programs.

Can you change the setup of the DVD recorder to record in 4:3? (I know it's 14:9 but thats the way its going into the TV)

I had the same problem with a Philips DVD recorder when I tried to record widescreen stuff from Sky
