what does maximum sustainable heart rate mean?

    Bit confused as this term forms the basis of a training plan of which all zones are a % of the MSHR rather than %HRmax.

    I have my HRM set up for %HRmax with the max calculated as 220-age = 188.
    Looked up a summary file from last week where I had gone all out up a hill and the recorded max heart rate was 211!
    So maybe %MSHR is more accurate?

    those age based formulas are complete junk. A lot of people will be off by 20+ beats. and even 10 beats is a world of difference.

    If you've seen a maximum of 211 and it definately wasn't an artifact due to a poor contact with your chest strap or interference then that's your max heart-rate. Or at least it's approaching it, you may be able to go a beat or two higher.

    I've never heard of MSHR, if you've seen it in relation to just one plan it's may be something the author made up. Sustainable for how long? The maximum heart rate I can sustain for 10 minutes is very different from that I can sustain for 30 minutes
