Check your Software Update. I'm installing it now, will let you know how it goes/if there are any problems. It's the biggest frickin' update I have seen yet!

    Software Update tells me:

Mac OS X Update (PowerPC) Version 10.4.8 Size 22.3MB

I can't find the file on Apples updates site either.

I think OP is on an Intel Mac

Just to confirm, yes, I was updating my Intel Mac, a MacBook Pro. I guess that's why the update was over 100MB in size, in my case it was 220MB! :O

Anyway, the update went well. It took unusually long to reboot the first time, but after that everything seems a little snappier than before. All my apps work as well, nothing bad to report. I admit I'm a risk taker, this is a production machine and I'd be up all night fixing things if anything went wrong. However, I've been doing this since I switched to Mac OS X with 10.2, and never had any kind of issue with any update.

I've seen one small bug on my machines.
icons are being placed over other ones on the desktop - i.e. say you've something on the desktop in the top right corner - put in a dvd and the dvd icon will go on top of the existing one.

I'm not too bothered about it :)

I updated some older PowerPC Mac's today, and the update was 22MB for them.

As far as your desktop, you can easily clean that up (I think look in the View menu).

yeah my macbook took unusually long to boot and then restarted before booting again...it works prefectly. I'm a bit worried about the restarting thing even though I used that test thingy on the internet to see if it suffered from random shut down and it went fine...

I believe the 10.4.8 updater reboots twice on all Intel Mac's, so that's nothing to worry about.

What's new in it? Is the update just for intel macs or for all os x?

It's for everybody who has Mac OS X Tiger, both PowerPC and Intel. You can find a list of improvements and new features on Apple's web site, in software update, or at macfixit.com. Interestingly, one of them is:

"Improves reliability for connections made in Ireland with an external Apple USB Modem."

I guess with all the line splitters here, Apple had to modify their drivers to cope with Eircom's **** lines.... lol
