    Heading away travelling for the year and was just wondering if i have to get one of those new scanable passports? i still have 6 years left on my old passport, cheers

    I think you might be confusing scannable aka machine readable with the new biometric passports that will start being issued in October. All current passports are machine readable.

    Have a look at http://www.oasis.gov.ie/moving_country/passports_and_visas/

    You should be fine as long as it is like the one below, which is machine-readable. It is fairly likely that you have one.
