Can't get wireless to work

I just got a Philips wireless router and followed the instuctions completely. My network is showing up, and telling me I'm connected and everything, but it won't load any pages or connect to MSN or anything. I can't figure out what's wrong with it. Any ideas?

(It's a SNB5600 router, if that helps, with a Telewest connection.)

Are you connected to the router? Enter http://192.168.1.2 in the address bar of your web browser, and if you get connected to the router, then your wireless connection IS working.

If that does work, the problem is probably cause by a clash of subnets. Can you tell us what IP address you get on your PC when you don't use the Philips router, and connect directly to the Telewest router? If it's also a 192.168.1.something address, then you need to change the subnet on the router to be 192.168.2.x.

I did all the things suggested in the FAQ and the only one there was a problem with was when I typed in ping www.google.ie . It said it could not find the host name.

I clicked that Foxwood and it connected to the router. I'm connected directly to the Telewest modem now, and did the ipconfig/all thing, and I think my IP is 80.192.XX.XXX .I could easily be looking at the wrong thing though.

No, that's probbaly right. You might want to obscure the last couple of digits, though, to be on the safe side.

If you're connecting properly to the router, then you don't have a wireless problem - it's set up properly. So the problem is probably between the router and the Telewest Modem. Not many people here are familiar with Telewest as they don't operate in Ireland, so I can't give any specific advice, but it is not unusual for Cable Modem systems to be "bonded" to a specific MAC address. That means that you can't just plug in a different ethernet device and have it work. In some cases, just turning off the cabe modem for a few minutes will be sufficient to release the registration, and have the Modem start talking to the new device. In other cases, you have to "clone" the PCs MAC address (but I don't see an option to do that in a quick scan of the Philips manual).

Do you have to have any software installed on the PC to log into the Telewest service? or does the modem hande everything?

There was an option to clone the MAC in the setup, actually. I ignored it though.

I'll try setting it up again, and cloning the MAC address.

Nope, that didn't work. I ran a diagnostic on MSN Messenger, and the problems it identified were "My DNS servers are not able to resolve IP addresses" or something, and Key Ports (proxy and firewall settings). I also turned the modem off and back on, but that didn't work either.

No, don't do that unless you are quite sure it is necessary. It probably won't cause any problems, but it's best not to mak changes unless you're sure they are necessary.

(And if you do clone the MAC address, make sure you've got a wired connection to the router, not a wireless connection. You'd need to clone the ethernet MAC address, not the wireless address).

This Newgroup post says that telewest don't restrict the MAC address that can connect any more. You just need to reset the modem by unplugging it (the power switch alone doesn't reset it, apparently), and then it will talk to the router after you power the modem back up.

That worked! Weird, I'd plugged it out a couple of times, but I guess I hadn't left it for long enough.

Thanks so much Foxwood, I really appreciate all your help! :)

I just had the same issue with a friends wireless SNB5600
Unplugged it for a few minutes and let it reboot. Voila!
Now he owes me lunch ;)

Btw, the above IP didn't work. I cannot access router still but it's unsecured so we can still use it.
