In light of the boards end of month game which has a great field but is out of most students price ranges i was wondering if any students want to play a similar game for a more affordable price maybe 20/30/40/50 euro.
there are some relly good student players out there and would be nice to have a proper game amongst us with mostly pride at stake. im sure we could get one of the clubs to host it.

and who knows who ever wins it could challenge the boards players next month!

just an idea get back to me!
and remember students are your future!!!!

i'd play... i'd suggest 27+3, if maybe the Jackpot would host it on a friday evening, 25min blinds, or maybe sunday afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭Legend_DIT

I'd prefer the Fitz as a venue but I'd play in this for a 20-40 buy-in as long as it's freezeout!

Oh wait... you said really good student players - ah feck it, I'll just have to dog them all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

there was a great structure in the merrion last year (even though i hate that place and it was the only time i played there) for students. it was a 50euro freezeout with 30minute blinds and it made for some great poker. probably the most appealing tourney i have played. would like to see this again. i think 45+5 wouldnt be that big a step for too many students. and sure DIT could run 10€ stts before it or soemting. it would be a good laugh and make a nice enough prizepool too id say. anyone interested organising it? jackpot (havent played there but sounds good) or fitz, (never been a bad one there) would be great. also there were 100+ runners last time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,434 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

I would suggest that you need to have at least a €10 reg in order to entice any of the clubs to put you up for a private tourney with dealers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

I'd play, and prob try and drag up a few more from college too.

well imsure me and jeff could do some organising. Maybe something along the lines of 40+10 or so so that we could get dealers maybe some food etc. As with the numbers i know there are enough decent college players to make it a good field. I supposse we could get ahead of ourselves and call it the student championships!

Did i mention i think the event should be RAZZ. anybody. no. please!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,771 ✭✭✭carfax

Razz definitely!! Long live low ball.

If I can help with the organisation of this (dealers, etc) let me know.

Also I think all money in the prize-pool should go towards €500 tickets to Poker Ireland events!!!, anyone, no???

you could get something like a ladders thing going.

get 5 colleges in dublin together

    rd1 $5 rebuy
    Rd2 $30
    Rd 3 $120
Rd4 the 500 games mentioned above.

u can buy in at any stage obvioulsy.

also a stendnt series of poker (SSOP) would be a good idea.

    Shameless advertising me, no....

By the way there is a free entry to tonight's $50+.50c BoylePoker.com satellite which takes place at 7:30pm (tonight). You can win the ticket by answering the question below.

In tonight's satellite there is one €535 ticket guaranteed for any of our future events but especially for tomorrow night's Poker Ireland debut event in the Fairways Hotel, Dundalk (starts at 8pm).

    Ok here's how to win;
The first person to post here, in this thread, the answer to this question will get the satellite ticket.

I don't want to give away the exact year of the event because people will just be able to google the answer, but it took place in the WSOP main event in the early 1980's.

Can you name the player that on day one of the WSOP main event was down to a single chip (a 500 chip), and went on to win the event outright?

Answer must include the players full name (i.e. nickname).

How many colleges in dublin have weekly poker tournies or even an actual poker soc? DIT, DCU, UCD, TCD, any other ones, don't know about the private colleges, griffith and the like.

DCU poker soc last year did have an attempt at trying to make a league table based on weekly finishes, not sure if it came to anything though. Don't know about the other colleges but the weekly tournie in dcu is a €10 FO.

IT Tallaght also one as for Maynooth. So what are we trying to organise here Anto. Is it a Boards.ie tourney for students or is it a student championship?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

I wish I was still a student!! DCU had some good competitions last year. The players were average enough, didn't take very much to make the final table or the money. There was usually about 40 people in it and it was a €10 buy in.
DCU organised a pretty big tournament last year with about 110 people and it was €50 buy in. I didnt get to go to it but I heard that it was very good tournament set up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,771 ✭✭✭carfax

Rob Hume from Trinity organised last years student championships.

If you, think there will be enough interest I could start organising a venue and start begging for sponsors to add prize-money.

I would need to know how many of the Poker Socs (from all over the country) would be interested and would need to know they are fully on board.

The format that I think would work best would be a €50 freeze-out or double-chance.

We could easily put this on before Christmas and if we do it right we could get 1,000 runners, I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

Well I would naturally be up for this.

The DCU event in the merrion last year was really good event minus how I did personally and they do regular weekly events so should get good number from there.

I think this could be big event and sure if it's self deal then once I am knocked out within 30 minutes I could probably help deal some of the tables if needs be.

I think if you got half that amount you'd be doing well. But yeah that sounds like a top notch idea.

Also Queens Cork IT and Galway have poker societys. Wouldn be a bad idea for them to take a trip up for the tourney. Steven where would you be holding this tourney if it where to go ahead. Also college poker societys could run satelites for a few extra runners. I think €50 is perfect. As for D/C. Involves more work on your behalf but then again it will keep you busy.

Any chance this could lead into a student team poker event.
If they was teams, representing the coleges then you would have a better job getting the likes of galway up.
the colleges could run games to get into the team, or a weekly league,
and make it 8 players a team, 25 a head, 200 a team. One team per college
How many teams could we get

    DIT A
    DIT B
    TCD
    UCD
    DCU
    Galway
    Cork
    ITT

I have the perfect venue in mind, I just don't want to post it here, sorry.

As well as that I do think that Students from around the country would make the trip up close to Christmas holidays as lots of people come up to Dublin for the day shopping and exams will just have finished...... we could possibly work it that Accom. is paid for by sponsor too.

"As for D/C", don't understand what you mean here???

1,000 runners wouldn't be that hard to achieve, last year there were 250 with minimal promotion/qualifiers and just about no players from colleges outside of Dublin city.

    Thanks.

i think the original post was about a once off boards game for students or anyone who would be comfortable with a freezeout up to about 30 euro as the limit. That game could be easily organised for any time and would be fun.

Also, i think a SSOP would be great fun. I had a weird idea of taking 6-8 tables of someone (Ste? you got any tables with Poker Ireland you want to lend to DIT for a week) and taking over a room in DIT for a week...
    • Monday - 5 euro rebuy, 2pm-8pm
    • Tuesday - 8 euro, Omaha. 2pm-8pm
    • Wednesday - 12 euro RAZZ, 11am -3pm. 10euro NLHE short-handed 3pm -9pm
    • Thursday - 8 euro Omaha HI/LO , 2pm-8pm
    • Friday - NLHE, 20 Freezeout MAIN EVENT. Noon til finish.

    It'd be deadly!!

while i am completly up for a boards game. I am also fully behind a student championship. The idea of a really good structured tourni for a low buy in would be great for players who want to play good games but dont have the bank rolls.

I mean if you get 300 runners at 50euro thats a prize pool of 15k and with sponsership could be more. When else would you have the opurtunity to win 15k for 50euro. as for quailifying constant qualifers from colleges would immediatly increase the field and allow for a big sized tourni. i am very for this idea..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 77 ✭✭Mr.M

ya getting a proper tourney like this set up with be a great idea...allready thinking something along those lines in galway...i think initially nui vs gmit and then take it from there...maybe qualifiers or something like that...

One thousand runners + Added money + lots of free stuff.......Free stuff, who can say no to free stuff????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I think this is undoubtedly gonna be a winner providing the various poker socs put the effort in to run sats etc for it,

I think a team event could work but possibly save this for a different day, I know there would definately be more then eight people in aungier st wanting to play in THE big student poker tournement.

Ste McC seems well behind it and imo there is no better man and he is a great TD to boot, so i am told.

definetly, i would like to say Steven McLean is a very formidable man, as a player i would like to say i taught him everything he knows...but not everything i know ;) go for it stephen. 1000 runners is very unlikely, anything over 500 would be great. there were 300 runner in UCDs main event 2 years ago so 500 is probably do able. i think mid-novemeber is the best as exams for me anyway run up to the 22nd Dec. how does 11th November sound? gives plenty of time to organise and publisice it...

Not too sure about what the right date would be but if we could get the word around to all the PokerSocs and have a meeting of some sort with all the organisers then I think it would be very realistic to be able to put together a plan for a 1,000 runner event (with loads of free stuff).

The sooner we organise this the better, if people are enthusiastic about it....

A similar event in England is the Warwick Series of Poker which I played in last February, runs Friday evening to Sunday evening. Main event is a 2 day £40 freezeout NLHE, 10k starting stack and 30 minute levels. It got 132 runners this year. They were able to acquire sponsorship from an online poker site too to supply cards, chips, add money to the prizepool etc. The omaha tournament was a smaller event but still a decent structure.

This is a fine example of small time student thinking (sorry Fiddler!!). Why would you make your two day student Poker Championship a Double Chance? Why only 8,000 total chips? Why only 30 min levels. There is such a tourney on in Silks every Wednesday - therefore the structure is nothing special.

Be ambitious. Why not a 10,000 starting stack freezeout with 45min / 1 hr levels, running antes - the lot. Because you are all young and full of sugar there would be nothing stopping you guys playing 12 - 14 hours the first day, and late, late, late to a finish on the second day. Could be €40 / €50 entry + €10 / €15 reg (slightly higher percentage reg to cover organisers). Ste is offering to look after it and he knows his stuff: I am sure that he could make this happean.

4,000 + 4,000 DC // 30 min levels would equal a crapshoot after about 8 levels and is nothing that you can't play in Dublin anyway.

    End of Rant.

Edit: Shoutman seems to have gotten in ahead of me while I was typing // fielding work calls!!

I can give it to mention to Conor who chairs DCU pokersoc for this year, not sure he reads boards, sure a decent few would turn up for it.

See reg fees and students are like oil and water. Most student tourneys are self run, self deal, any tables chips etc supplies by the socs or donated, and the TD is a member of the relevant soc.

BUT seeing as everyone is going to want to play this, its not fair to ask people to sit out and sort out the running. I'd happily pay €50+10, small price to pay for a good game and the benefit of dealers.

yeah the only problem with such a large playing field is the event will turn out to be self-deal as a large number of tournie dealers are in fact students..dun dun dun!who will want to play of course.so at most a E10 reg fee...
also lloyd's idea will make perfect sense on hindsight...10k starting stack and hr blinds!

well you could have self deal until maybe 400 left, 40 dealers arent that hard to come by. if its not self deal then the reg will reflect that if it is then imn sure it will be adjusted to suit.
one thing though, if we are talkign about haev 1000 runners where do you suggest having it? i know they fit 300 (for pokersoc main event 2 years ago + side games too) into o`reilly hall in ucd with about2/3 of the room being used, but i dont like the idea of paying citywest or the like.

no poker room is ireland can hold those numbers. also gettiing chips for 1000 people and staff to cope with it will be expensive so expect at least a 10% rake. and finally it eill have to be over 2-3 days, which again would be great. nayway im looking to stephen here to see whens the earliest this could materialise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭sikes

if you are having 1000 people, there will be at least 2 day 1s prob three, unless you rent out the phoenix park

i think with a bit of planning this could get off the ground in a big way. i am sure i can get the tcd poker soc involed.

have a 1 week poker festival, starting around the 2nd week in december, most colleges are off then, i think

I dont think we'd get 1000. probably around the 500 mark. A 50 buy-in will turn off most non serious student players. 5 euro once a week is ok for most students, but alot couldn't afford to lose €50

i agree but at the same time aim high. theres no reason why this shouldnt be the best run student tournament ever held in ireland. i love the idea of this tournament, the though of playing for 10K plus for 50e is pretty nice. i think if we got 200 people playing it over 2 maybe 3 days then it would be defintely a great success. i think itl have to be on a weekend over november though. i dont know nayone who studies in november ever... UCd exmasn start around the 13thDec so no doubt others wont be far behind them.

I know its a long time away but I think it would be better to have this around January time that way all exams are out of the way and it would leave plenty of time to have people running sats or offering tickets to the tourney in their weekly game.
