    ....days ;)

Just having a chat today in college with a couple of guys, thinking back on the old primary school days, and a few topics came up. Anyone remember them Micro-T (I think thats what they were called) tests that we used to get? 'Question 1....There are four triangles.....circle the biggest triangle'. :D

Or anyone remember the mag/booklet that used to come out at Christmas, Súgra, or Solas? We couldnt remember what it was called. You'd pay for it mid Novemeber, about £1 or so and they'd arrive in the school before the Christmas holidays, full of puzzles, stories and all things Christmassy :o ....aww them were the days!

(PS my primary school days were 1988-1996) so not 'that' long ago.

Yep remember this you would look forward to it....almost.
I was in Primary around 86-87

Memory from Primary school were that the English book was the best
cos of the stories so it was almost not like school work and the History book
(discover the past?) was cool cos it had loads of pics.

My first book in school I can remember was Ann and Barry.
    This is Ann
    This is Barry
    Ann Likes Barry
    Barry likes Ann
    this is Spot...........

First memories of Primary school were 1st day where I thought my
teacher was a witch and had to be dragged away from me mammy.
Getting Bullied by the older brother of a class mate in junior infents but
same bully died in senior infents (dont know what was the cause)
I remember never feeling sorry for him even though he had dies cos he had
    bullied me.

Senior infents I had my first crush on a girl which laster up until sixth class
around 1st class the split the class into two seperate classes. Out of all the
girls I only like the looks of 2-3.

Last memories of Primary school were smoking at age 12.
Flashing in front of the girls at swimming lessons.
Feeling the girls legs and pulling up their dresses.
The Girl I liked and sat beside going away and kissing somoene else.
Hitting my best friend just because a group of lads egged me onto.
Climbing onto the school roof and jumping off it.
Climbing the goal posts to the top.
Getting picked last for football and always getting put in goals (I hate football now)

I remember fook all of Primary school. I was bullied for a while, sort of until I grew up to about a foot over the bloke. Remember starting off my illustrious badminton career in primary school.

"Súgradh" is for the smallies and "Sonas" is for the older children - you get a free poster with them too

Do the students still have to pay for the micra-T? I remember we had to bring in like 50p or so. Ah, Sugradh and Sonas, I remember now, thanks, YEAH!! The poster too, jeez I remember when they'd arrive in the school, wrapped in plastic, they had a great smell off them (normal new book smell I guess, but still...:D ) and were just full of stories, things to make and dots to join.

How I miss my childhood :(

Does anybody remember the Drumcondra Tests? They were specially imported from the teachers training college and there was a big deal made out of them when they arrived.I seem to recall they were colour coded according to difficulty.

yeah, it wasn't just Christmas it came out, there was one for every month, I still have about 7/8 of them at home (I left in primary in about 97/98) they were brilliant, always had fun facts at the back

Yes they do! Around a euro. They'll be updated in the next 3 or 4 years, once the New Curriculum has been in for 10 years.
I remember doing them in school myself and always finding it weird that they were such a big deal (pulling out the desks and the "testing in progress" sign on the door - it gave the Leaving Cert a run for it's money) yet we never found out how we got on!
It's kinda strange being on the other side of the fence now - reading out the instructions: Tell the pupils the following"We are now doing a test [Pause] Open your booklets on page 1" [Pause]

Speaking of Súgradh and Sonas mags I found a huge box of the weekly mags in the back of a press in my room filed in chronological order from 1978 - 1986! I just couldn't bin them - got the caretaker to store them away.

I kept all mine from 1984-92. there was sugradg and siamsa and they had really cool Christmas annuals, couldn't wait for them. Wednesday was soccer league and i got the golden boot for most goals scored (and i was the only girl on the team!) We used to have fantastic mr fox read to us as well.

What about the Christmas or before Summer holiday parties that were held in primary classrooms, bring in your favourite game/toy or whatever. :)

My primary school days were from July 69 to June 76 back then it was called national school, The school year used to start at the begining of July and 2 weeks later you got the school holidays, only 6 weeks back then.

    I remember Sonas and Siamsa.

In secondary school at the end of the year as a very special treat we'd get to see a film such as one of the St Trinians. Back then it was a big reel (which was tempermental and you prayed it wouldn't snap) and a projector.

In primary school the priest would come in every monday around 11am and quiz everyone on the sermon the day before. You got beaten round the classroom if you didn't know the answer.

Our country school had between 60 - 65 pupils in total. There were 8 in my class and 4 in my sister's. The female teacher had junior infants (baby infants back then) up to 2nd class, the master had 3rd to 6th class.

After you made your first holy communion there was a party in the priests house and you got a slice of cake, sweets and a mineral, not soft drinks back then.

I still call soft drinks by the name minerals today and get a confused look, rightly so. :)
Also getting the half a day off school and moved into the assembly hall to watch the Ireland games on telly.
