Im thinking of buying a laptop to play online, spending about 1000 euro on it. Anyone have any recommendations?

I was looking at some DCU offer
    http://www.computercentre.ie/members/get_details.php

Are any of these good value?

That link won't work! Dell are good for around the 1k mark.

I would avoid cheapo laptops from Aldi and Tesco etc. Look good on paper but the components are cheap - loud hardrives/fans etc.. and the batteries are useless. So many of my friends have bought them and had hassle.

Go to the Dell outlet store. You can get a nice laptop with a gig of ram, 100 gig hd and a 17inch monitor for 1000

Another vote for Dell, just have a look through their laptops. 1000 eurons will be more than enough to buy a decent lappy for poker.

    Won't be buying Dell again.

dodgy cd/dvd drive (paper clip routine)
    flimsy keyboard (c key borken)
    poor support
    battery scare

a nice win will buy me an acer

Reccomending Dell here also. Never had any problems. Friends have had problems with CD drives, but Dell have replaced them.

I'd have to go with Dell aswell.

Avoid Compaq/HP as their motherboards are notoriuos for giving up the ghost after a year or so (generally tends to happen about a month after the warranty has expired!)

I got a good fujitsu siemens Amilo laptop over a year ago and have had no probelms with it, well except its not waterproof but that was my fault.

Another recommendation for Dell - cheap, reliable, good support and all you need for playing online poker.

If you work for certain companies, you can get your machine from dell with a 7% reduction just for being an employee of that comany.

All you have to do is buy through www.dell.ie/epp

It's the same as their regular site except when you "customize and buy" a reduction will be applied to the computer (hardware only, not delivery)

When you are entering your details, you will have to write down the name of company X, that's it, you could save yourself a hundred quid.

If you work for any of the big companies, there's a good chance that they are part of this epp scheme, it's just not that widely known.

Yes dell are good, but I recommended acer laptops to a friend and he's been really happy with it so keep acer in mind too.

After a 4 year nightmare with Dell I'm now the proud owner of an Acer Ferrari. Anyone buying should just go to laptopsdirect.co.uk - definitely the cheapest place to get new laptops.

4 year nightmare lol. You can hardly blame dell for what you did to your laptop.

I don't know what you're implying but I was never happy with the performance of the dvd drive, they sent me the wrong replacement charger and u should see what the screen looks like now when I turn it on.

if you'd like to stay away from dell then i'd recommend trying acer.. very competitively priced..
or you could splash out a little and go for something with a little style...

sony vaio c-series ..expected to launch at around 1200e

apple macbook ..1050e with education discount (runs wind xp great through bootcamp)

Laptop wise id recommend Dell 2, just be careful of the grafix card there givin u...it may be(prob) out of date. Look out for cheap-er offers on the site...

Have u considered a desktop, u could get a fairly powerful 1 for 800e at komplett.ie if u buy the parts seperately

Will u be just using it for text documents, browsing etc, or playing games

also ur prob like myself and prefer mobility:D

Ugh Dell, they've been nothing but trouble for me.

I would pimp Acer to you, like my lovely current laptop.
