A bit of a trivial question, I know, but will the pav or buttery be open before freshers week, or will I have to wait until next Monday?

You do know the Pav has been open all summer, right? Buttery will be open for a few days during Freshers' Week, but not much after that.

Odd that it's only for a few days. Still handy to know, thanks.

Now that just blows goats. No more buttery....

I notice that it's only a recommendation, has it been decided upon one way or the other yet, or is the outcome still open?

That's really crap, was starting to enjoy the atmosphere in the Buttery last year, had changed loads from previous years and seemed to be heading in the right direction.

So now all we're left with is the Pav, which tbh won't satisfy the needs of all 15,000 students!

Exactly what I was thinking, I really like the place, prefer it to the pav for some reason. Absolutely right, the pav simply isin't nearly enough on its own, surely there must be some kind of alternative planned if the Buttery is to go? If not, there'll be a lot of pissed off students....

Actually i dont think that there will be as huge an out pouring of anger over the closure as one would expect when college authorities close the student bar. The Buttery for all of last year was dead, The SU did their best to spark soem interest in the venue and the table quizes were always a success but people dont tend to go tpo the buttery for a drink as much as they would go to the Pav or say to Doyles. I think the biggest gatherings in the buttery last year, or the ones that I saw were either SU related or boards beers, the place was just soo empty lal the time.

Being in town there are lots of places to go which arn't too pricey, have more of an atmosphere and most important of all arn't empty. Its sad thats its gone but the place was becomign unviable as a business.

Man, did you miss out! Drinking yourself silly in the height of summer while watching womens' cricket is an essential college experience. I recommend you try it next summer.

I'm with Awayindahils on this one. Despite the best efforts of the SU and others, the Buttery was just simply too crap a place to keep open.

Women's cricket, eh? Sounds very appealing. Watching this is now high on my to-do list.

Yeah well the Buttery was a bit crap sometimes, but surely that was part of its charm? Its dank darkness lent it a bit of atmosphere (as far as student bars can have atmosphere). I'll definately end up missing it, I had some good nights in there.

I liked the buttery for two reasons: it was quiet when you wanted a quiet drink, and it wasnt outdoors.

I've done the pav during winter, and enjoyed it, but its ****ing cold!

I didn't mind the Buttery, and I hate the pav in winter, but I can see why it had to close.

I'm not much of a drinker so I never really socialised in the Buttery unless Champions League was on, a band was playing or a comedy show was on. I'd never just pop down for a drink, very rarely. The Pav on the other hand, I'd be in a couple of times a week after training.

Pav's been fairly quiet over the summer with the exception of Friday nights.

  • I liked the atmosphere in the Buttery but then it was always full when I went in. I wasn't around last year. I always used to go for a quick drink after a lecture or before heading out somewhere. I liked it more than the Pav tbh. The Pav is too far away from the Arts Block!

The Buttery was too far away from the Hamilton, the main source of drunkards (also known as engineers and computer scientists)

If last year's crop are anything to go by - just think of it as watching an East German ladies athletic team from circa 1970

So we're basically talking a group of 1970s East German ladies athletic lookalikes playing cricket of all games. This strikes me as a fantastic thing to watch while stoned. It would warp your perception of reality.
