    Hey all,
I took the plunge and got a BMW 525 M-Tech. Anyone know a good BMW specialist garage in North Co.Dublin (even North County). Don't wanna pay over the top BMW garage services etc :)
Thanks in advance for any info!

AC Car Sales - South Circular Road
    Cartec - Dublin 15
    Robert Furley - Kells

They're the only independents I'd recommend.

You'll find that some of the main dealers are actually quite reasonable, others are to be avoided though.

I bought a car which was last serviced by Mays motors...many $$$ work I had to put into it to get it through the nct...Cheap? cos non BMW parts..the lamda probe which monitors emmisions was not and could not be plugged in, hence the car failed nct as emmissions were through the roof.

    I was pissed.

also I started a thrad a while ago on Joe Duffys finglas as I was genuinely shocked at the level of service I got....Shocked at how good it was...seriously/
    nO vested interest i sware.

    very happy.

Joe Duffys unfortunately have the worst name in the country for service - I've experienced it first hand. Overcharging, doing work not requested, damaging the car, being ignorant cnuts, charging for requested work that they didn't do. Its the common consensus amongst most long term BMW owners too. Most of the parts guys are decent, one of two of the sales blokes are sound too.

Haven't heard anything decent about Mayss to be honest either.

My current car, a BMW 735i, was serviced there for as long as it was in this country until I bought it. The previous owner was horrified when he came to collect it one day to find it being damaged in the motorised car wash. I suppose "damaged" is a big word, but you all know what I mean. The surface never looked great again

At my last service there, the whole passenger side front wing was scratched, as well as the door. The drivers side sill also had two chunks taken out of it. Also got charged €135 to tell me there was a crack in my windscreen! They had the car back twice to fix the scratches etc, first time they just blasted it with a power washer and returned it to me with nothing else done. Sent it back to them and they eventually fixed it. Have had plenty of other problems with them, and have heard some horror stories first hand (including them losing a guys full exhaust system)

I found them fantastic to be honest when they were based in Griffith Avenue - but alot of the staff have left since they moved to North Road in Finglas, and I won't be using them again for servicing as their standards have plummeted. Some of the guys who did work there set up Cartec which I posted details for above - afaik Joe Duffys now send some of the more complex work to Cartec to be done too.

I have only ever bought parts from Joe Duffy, and haven't found them great to deal with...

I usually go to frank keane on the naas road, the guys there are extremly helpfull / friendly. They also let you pay by credit card, and pick up the parts after hours from the security guard ( which is a big plus if you work 9->5 ). I once asked the guys in joe duffy would i be able to do this for a part, they alost laughed at me.

There was a re-call on my last BMW and i brought it to frank keane to have the work done. Again i found the service very good, even though my car was 9 years old it didn't cost me a penny, and they even washed my car! ;)

Cheers lads for the info, will keep Frank Keane BMW in mind as i work but a stone throw from them.
Just sent them a message asking how much for a retrofit of a SatNav system would be for a E39 525. Wonder how they will quote me, 1500+?

I'd say closer to €4k. The parts aren't cheap. If you're anyway competent, you can do it yourself - did mine at the weekend: http://www.bmw-driver.net/SatNav_1.asp

Umm 4k? I am competent when it comes to electronics so buying the parts seems to be the better idea.
Where did you buy your install kit? Ebay bits or BMW order?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭kdevitt

All from eBay... theres about €1500 worth of parts needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,335 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

Ah :) had my fingers crossed it would be easier. As well. Thanks for the info.

One more thing, did you have to connect to the cars computer to notify it you had the SatNav unit installed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭kdevitt

Nope - picks it up itself once the retrofit loom is all connected. Think you can have the car coded to enable BMW Assist, but not sure thats even available over here.

Just found a complete retro fit kit for the E39 from a guy in Germany.
Its coming to about €2500 though, but its the widescreen version.
Will see how the kitty looks after the now unused car is sold :)

Good luck with the new car - the 525 m-tech is a cracker. One of my friends has a 2001 one, and it is an absolute gem. He's had it on track a couple of times (going to Mondello on Sunday with it), and it performs very well (even if the 5 is a bit big for throwing around a track!)

Just found that the on-board computer is the low tech version so I would need to upgrade that before I could install the SatNav unit :( arse!
    Ah well

I'm another that will highly recommend F.Keanes for service.

Furley is also a top man. He gave me 2hrs of his time once diagnosing a problem and didn't charge me a penny.

Ive been to Robert Furley in Kells a few times. Superb. The most decent guy Ive met so far.

Just searched for a BMW garage that would carry out retro fits for an E90 and found this page.

Do the garage's listed on this page still carry out BMW specialist work. Are they good/cheap etc?

David Breach out in Walkinstown did the servicing on my old 318Ci, very reasonably priced.

Thansk but does he carry out specialist work such as fitting bluetooth radios, cruise control etc.

I've got a local handyman back home that does all my servicing, but he says this work is over his head!

Courtney Motors on the North strand (where the bowling alley used to be) very efficient and friendly service.

Also Autotech in Baldoyle Ind. Estate.

Good experience with both of these places.
