Mad old place alright, i knew the girl that worked the cloakroom fairly well and Monty got to know my face after going there so much, thank god ,ive seen what that fvcker can do to people with the concrete steps outside.....
Remember the bikers used to come in every now and again, fecken loads of them.I always made sure i walked outta there straight those nights , i had a fear of knocking one of their bikes over resulting in a domino effect.

I remember I was in the car park across the street one night, waiting for some people to catch up, and the whole crowd of the bouncers came over and enquired politely if I was planning to steal the van I was leaning against.

Keeping firm control of the bodily functions, I told them if I was going to steal a car, it wouldn't be that one. They laughed it off and headed back in with muttered discussion about the bullion in the back seat.

That bouncer Ciaran had a kewl topknot... isn't he doing tattoos up by the Jez these days? The kids here will have no idea what us old timers are babbling about - bring back Vagabonds! What other nightclub had people holding a candle light vigil after it was closed down by the Gardaí? :D I didn't see anyone missing the castle, thats for sure. There was a protest outside Salthill Garda station as well. When asked whether or not there should be some kind of a chant, Monty said, "no, theres dignity in silence." Ah them were the days...

    /Now get off mah lawn

Hang on there. The Castle was the dogs balls - especially on FeetFirst nights (wed) & you had your skin full of £1.19 a bottle 'Champane Cider' from Dunnes. Ahh the memories (or lack of them).

I dunno, I have reservations about any place where the bouncers warn the undercover drug squad that there might be undercover drug squad on the premises tonight, so hide these drugs I'm selling you! (the last act in the tragicomedy that was the castle, if I recall the newspaper reports at the time) :D

Seriously though, theres never been anything like Vagabonds before or since, and I go back as far as CeeJays and the original Oasis. Twas a cultural icon. With biker babes.

My oul man used to be head bouncer there - He told me what went on. Put it this way, to no surprise it wasn't anything like the papers reported

Funny though, im about twice his size, he's nearly 60 and he'd still k1ck the sh1te outta me... I'd hate to think what he was like in his day

aye i remember that...... i was in the protest....
and also remember very little after that.. they gave free drinks in the eglington to people who protested that day.... stil see a few of the old heads about the place and recall that event.. vaguely.. :D:D:D:D

    them were the days

as for the castle. the bouncers were telling me who to go to, to get what ever i needed ( if you know what i mean) never went there again.. only there the once... and that was enough....

Went to the Castle a few times ,too many scumbags for my liking.Mind you Carl Cox was worth it.Salthill used to be a haven in those days.
I quiet liked the Oasis though pretty relaxed crowd in there and the women were A1 , CJs .......jesus far too many nights in there of drunkenness.
The only places that i tried in town those days were Kno Knos and The Bentley.....the later leaving alot to be desired , twas the CPs of its day.Mind you i wasnt old enough to be in any of them but the old youth discos had lost their appeal.

It was where the immigrant center is now in Salthill beside the casino.

I'll never forget the night I gave myself a black eye when I knee'd myself in the head moshing to Enter Sandman haha..
Or when I head butted a huge biker guy by mistake and he turned to me and said "Yeaaaaaaaahhh" lol best club ever and Monty was a legend.

And lets not forget the one pound a pint of Blackthorn cider before 12. We'd always order 7 each :D

Mac Peeks beside it was great too for a game of pool before the club.
Naked was my favorite club (Friday) although downstairs was good too on Saturdays.

Saturdays were the best, I remember one time all these hardcore bikers were moshing in the pit and someone elbowed a bouncer by accident. He nearly put him through the wall and stood in the middle of the pit flexing. The first and only careful moshing session I have ever seen! :D DJ Des Free was running naked up until quite recently, the last place was just off Eyre Square, in the Vic. Damn good spot, I think hes packed it in now though. He was in Cuba for a good while, the gyppo before that, and the warwick and liquid at one stage too. Jesus I have gone out a lot.

They tried to run Saturday night a few times as well, I remember the guy running it was told by the bouncers to cool it. "Listen, we just don't want to see anyone get hurt," they said. "Go somewhere else then," he said.

    :D

There was a night called Sex Kitchen alright, i remember the flyers but i cant for the life of me remember if it was in Vagabonds i think it was though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 445 ✭✭soundbyte

Sex Kitchen was in the Castle. Can't remember it being anywhere before that.

The cheap champagne cider you speak of was Princess Pippin. Although I was a blue Thunderbirds man myself.

And to JohnCleary — presume that's not your real name then. I only ever remember POH being head bouncer, although maybe I just thought that.

Is that Lisa you're talking about, or was there another one? Lisa had kind of honey-brown hair, great craic and a killer in a black slinky dress... I do chat with Fran Fox from time to time as well when I see her in town.

Ah the memories! Vagabonds was definitely something special. The only nightclub I've ever been in where you could stand on the stairs and have dance music from the ground floor in one ear and rock/metal from the basement in the other. A trippy experience even if you weren't barely able to stand up from excess alcohol consumption :)

Does anyone else remember the way they used to have tables around the dance floor in the basement? I remember demolishing a table of drinks while going a bit mad to "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins when it first came out as a single. I had just bounced (or been pushed) from the middle of the floor and had nothing to stop me but the tables.

Did they sell cheap cocktails there as well or am I wrong? Something like £2 for a generous Sex On The Beach?

more than likely pushed... it happened alot :D:D:D:D:D what you had to do was keep your feet firmly planted and let your body do the rest... people bounce off you then...:D :D:D it could have been me you bounced off...LOL

oh they did indeed.. as well as woodpecker cider and a few other cheap drinks..

friday night was always blackrussians for 2quid at the small corner bar upstairs..
even when it wasn't advertised (only at that bar though)

and who here remembers the big water guns filled with cocktails..
some of my cheapest nights when they had them going around

the Oasis, that brings back memories for me, i used to go there 5 nights a week on average, sometimes seven, always had free entry.
even met my wife there, she used to be pissed off when i told people we met in Angel's lap dancing club.:D

I think that could be a good topic to start in the Rock/Metal forum - "The Art of The Mosh Pit" :)

Without wanting to drag the thread too far off topic, is there anywhere left in Salthill worth going to any more? I realise the Warwick is still there but are there any other nightclubs left?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭muppetkiller

Other than that Slovak pub with the very sexy bar girl ...Salthill is a ghost town.

Yeah, I think the locals pretty much put their foot down and said "no more fackin nightclubs!". I suppose its easy to see where they are coming from. You won't get a license for a club in Salthill anymore, someone tried it in Liquid lately, which is why the place is still freshly painted and boarded up. The Warwick caters to a more mature crowd, they don't even open for student nights (Thursdays) as far as I know.

Mind you if anyone is sick of the boring nightclub scene ..De Burgos is pretty cool on a Saturday night...
It's dark , tunes are good and it's much cheaper for entry and beer than any of those fancy pants Halo places

A bit too claustrophobic though, bit like downstairs vagabonds , the feckin sweat would be falling from the ceiling.

I would also add upstairs in An Púcan to the list for the same reasons as above. Of course it helps if you're partial to a bit of drum n' bass. Or so drunk that you're past caring what music is being played :D

KnoKnos brings back memories; I was a barman there for 18 months (which included the days when the name was changed to The Tower). We used to have great craic in it, watching both the ladies and the gents taking off the wedding rings as they came in!

For the younger ones here, KnoKnos was the club in the back of the Lions Tower on Eglington Street, where the GPO now stands.

Does anyone remember the name of the back bar in KnoKnos?
