Need Advice on My latitude cpx 500

OK don't laugh, my desktop PC died and i was able to resurect my old Latitude. (CPX500)
500MHZ processor but with only a 64MB and a 128MB memory stick in each slot.
I have attempted to put in another "generic" 128 PC 100 CL2 chip but it does not recognize it, at least I don't think it does. Should it not read 256MB or some such as total memory, it does not
Perhaps I am reading it wrong
anyway the first memory i bought was cl2.5 , that of course did not work, the latest is a Kingston KTD INSP7500/128, which is cl2 144 pin, fits in but not recognized.
I cant afford a new desktop right now so upgrading some memory is the only thing I can do.
I guess the other question - will it even matter it is slow as frozen snot
any and all suggestions welcome..BTW great site!

The max memory allowed for that laptop is 512mb, so it should accept the stick of 256.
