    Hey all,

Thought ISS sent out an e-mail with info on these but I've had more than a few queries on it. The new laptop deals are up on the ISS site. There's deals from Dell and Apple. If you want to avail of the Apple deal, move fast. There's a special deal on an iPod if you order before 7th October.

Generally, from what I've seen, the models are better than last years and cheaper and having chatted to the guys from both companies, they seem to offer a great deal of support that you don't really get if you buy through another source.

Anyhoo, the link is below. Have a look.

The Dell student offers for this year are all Latitudes - the D520C, D520 & D620. Starting at €1015 up to €1335 for the base models with lots of typical Dell extras.

Apple give a 10% discount to Trinity students, so for example the mid-range macbook comes down to €1187. If ordered before Oct 7th it is possible to get up to a €160 rebate on an iPod, as long as they are bought together.

There is also an offer on a HP 5440 Deskjet printer from Ergo, not sure if it's actually cheaper or not though.

You have to be able to log into the IS Services site to avail of either of these offers as the links are only available to students of Trinity.

And would you believe it they included this link in our orientation pack (along with several others) which were all local access.

The ordinary edu discount is only 6% compared to the 10% we get in college

As an alternative, you could keep an eye online for some deals. Plenty of people looking for college laptops over here.

Or the dell outlet store. currently its poor in comparison with what it was, but can be good every now and then.

I personally wouldn't bother with a dell. I bought one last year when i came to trinity, and it's way too heavy to bring in much. Get a nice light, small sony or something similar. trust me, if you cycle in like i do, it's a pain ya could do without. Even when i'd get the bus in, it's way too heavy to carry all day. They are very handy around exam time though, and if you connect to the network, ya never need to leave the library to check things.

pff, I have a dell thats about a billion times lighter than most of the overpriced vaio's - 12.1" laptops ftw :D

i'm just saying i got an inspiron 6000 last year, with a 15.2 screen, and it's very heavy compared to a little sony i was messing around with in dixons last week that had a better spec for 100quid less and it was really really light, and small. Granted, my laptop's nearly a year old, so a better spec for 100 quid less would be expected. anyways, the only reason i got the 6000 was because i wanted the higher spec but that meant i had to get the one with the bigger screen hence the more weight. i would be perfectly happy with a 13" screen, because of the size and weight thing. my bro has an older lattitude with a 14" screen and it's light enough, but nothing compared to the small light ones they have in dixons. Just shop around before ya go onto dell.ie and buy one. ya might be suprised by how compact and light some of the other ones are.

thats an inspiron though, you bought a massive laptop so don't be surprised when its heavy....mine is tiny and light.

infact some of the dell X300's and X1's are some of the lightest ones going, unless you fancy paying double the price for a comparable sony....

and fyi dixons would be a very expensive place to buy 'any' laptop........ sony sell them directly too i imagine thats alot cheaper....(though you can't customise on sony style europe like u can in the us..)

yeh but dell are rubbish! go with the apple's you wont regret it or pay the extra for the vaios...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

I bought the cheap cheap dell, the Inspiron 1300 - and it's perfect, f*ck all wrong with it for just shy of €400. It runs Photoshop and Dreamweaver, without much of a struggle - and unless you're an outright wimp you should have no problems carrying it in your rucksack all day.

Not quite fair really, build quality imo isn't up to that of sony, but what they lack there their returns policies make up for....
go with the apple's you wont regret it
If you don't need anything other than the standard set of apps.
or pay the extra for the vaios...
    Eh students?

Well if it does wat you want, that's perfect. mine's a heavy fecker. it's big, and it's not really what i wanted. I was just saying, get the lightest one you can get once it does what you want, as it's a pain carrying around a lump like mine. I personally thought the one i was looking at the other day in dixons was better for me. but that's just me.

I have a really nice Vaio that I got ridiculously cheap on ebay because it has no battery, box or manuals and has a small hole in the side. But it was CHEAP!

    <3 ebay

I got myself a Dell Inspiron 6000 and would probably prefer a slightly smaller laptop but I'm reasonably content with it as I don't use a desktop in the office at home. Doesn't really bother me carrying around.

I bought this beauty of a laptop here on Boards. Good price, too.

Yep, got the same one and am very happy with it.

thinking of getting a macbook (nice black one :D with 1gb RAM) any thoughts? I've got an iMac at home (woot) so just thinking that a Macbook would be the logical counterpart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

I've just gotten a macbook and very please with it :D Already networked and stuff in my room and in the process of getting all the settings to my liking. I'd say go for the macbook, it's a sweet machine, nice size and weight, performs well and is easy to use.

I went for the white macbook because I couldn't justify paying an extra €150 on it just for the sake of the colour! But the black one is so much nicer...

Anyways, I picked up a new 30G iPod with it for €129, but that deal finishes tomorrow or Saturday.

Great purchase overall, with a good discount from the Trinity store.

Hey xebec, whats the general battery life like on the macbook?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

Haven't really been using it not plugged in yet - need to be near a connection point anyway so may as well leave it plugged in. Have heard about people getting 3/4 hours even while playing a DVD, don't know how accurate it is, but if that's true it'd be a pretty decent battery life for general use!

Another thing that tempted me to get the macbook was the apparent ease of changing the amount of RAM in the computer - Apple have made this a simple procedure and given loads of info on how to do it. I'm a bit cash-strapped at the moment so couldn't get as much RAM as I would have liked, but will definitely upgrade in the future.

thats a rather ill-informed prospective, its just as easy if not easier to change the ram on a dell, or actually all of my laptops its been pretty trivial to change the ram on...

OK, fair enough, but as a person who is not entirely comfortable with pulling apart computers I was impressed with the method Apple have employed in the macbooks - it only requires removing the battery - where as I would have been less comfortable removing the casing on my Dell laptop. My bad :(

This trend of people actually buying Mac laptops (outside of the core obsessive-fan audience like me) is quite interesting. We should set up MacSoc (the Dublin University Macintosh Society). And affiliated to the local MUG (http://www.clubmac.ie/)

There's a 3"x3" panel at the bottom of my laptop. four screws and you can slide in more ram. wahey :D

Same. Nice slot I can just chuck in another gig if needs be.

And Beards Appreciation Society before a MacSoc.

^^^ its like that on alot of powerbooks too, newer ones might have them below the battery, but the old system was just fine imo.

Would you guys reccomend getting a laptop for college? I really want one but need to justify why I need one at home!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

what course are you doing? i can't remember. If its anything where you'll have essays having a laptop is very handy, can go into a nice quiet part of the library or that to write them, not wait around to use public computer rooms where the space bars seem to be dodgey alot of the time(or were 4 years ago anyway)
