    Philips 42" LCD-TV 42PF9731D/10 PP3 Ambilight 1920x1080 PIP 4500:1 HD-ready

    Philips 42" LCD-TV 42PF9831D/10 PP3 HD Ambilight 1366x768 PIP 7000:1 HD-ready

For HD TV which is better - to have better resolution ie 1920x1080 or higher Contrast Ratio ??

Any contrast over 1500 is acceptible in illuminated room. The higher contrast figures are only meaningfull in a unlit room or VERY bright backlight. (The Backlights will be similar = peak white brightness).
Ability to do dark shades and pale pastels is important and there is little difference.

    GO for the
    Philips 42" LCD-TV 42PF9731D/10 PP3 Ambilight 1920x1080 PIP 4500:1 HD-ready

It will be the better overall picture.
How often do you watch TV in a blacked out room with dark grey or black walls?

Lots of info here on that TV. Some complaints, but there always is no matter what you pick
