Airport Thieves

My excellent weekend in Scotland has ended on a sour nite as my camera has gone missing from my bag.

This afternoon in Edinburgh airport i was on the delayed 2.50PM flight back to Dublin, after checking in i walked through the metal dectector thing as all i had was a small backpack, the guy proceeded to open it and take everything out and said i would have to leave all the toiletries in my bag behind unless i went back and checked it in so i reluctanly went back down, queued again and checked my bag in.

I was a bit pi**ed off this is riduculaous way of going about things,Dublin & even London Gatwick are not as strict as this, anyway i forget about it,arrived Dublin, picked up my bag from the conveyer belt and went home, when i took everything out of my bag ive just discovered my camera (which cost best part of €500) is gone,i definitely remember it being in my bag when i checked it in,so i phone Edinburgh airport only for some unhelpful man to answer and said "nothings been handed in maybe call back tomorrow" why would something be handed in i believe the camera was deliberately taken from my bag,of course it's also possible it may have been taken in Dublin but personally i believe it was taken in Edinburgh,im almost 100% it was stolen, the bag was zipped so it couldn't have fallen out,ive never had anything like this happen from me before ive lost luggage but got it back but this is something different and im not sure what to do now,and please no jokes about leaving valueables in your bag i can do without it right now.

Anyway can anyone recommend a course of action to take?Edinburgh airport lost property don't seem to be of much help, probably not much chance of me getting it back (wasn't insured either) but it's worth a go,has anyone had valueables stolen from their bag in an airport before?all advice appreciated.

Did u have any holiday insurance?

No cos i didn't think id need it i only usually get it if im going away for a summer holiday or for a few weeks at a time someplace where i have to check luggage in i was only in Scotland from Friday till Monday and i only had a small backpack with me which i brought with me on the plane going over but fu**in Edinburgh airport and their stupid rules involving deodorants and aerosols, etc meant i had to check in a small bag and then my camera goes missing,im seriously pi**ed off over this.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but its not Edinburgh airport's stupid rules, its the UK Department of Transport's restrictions following the last security scare a couple of weeks back.
Customers must NOT carry the following items through security in their hand baggage:

Liquid cosmetics - However, solid cosmetics may now be taken in hand baggage
    All toiletries
    All liquids
    All drinks
    Cigarette lighters
No gels, pastes, lotions, (e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, etc.)

Well, for a start, make a complaint of theft to the Edinburgh police.

Did you buy your ticket with a credit card? You *might* be insured, though I don't know about theft.

When you complain to the Edinburgh police about theft, cc your letter to them to the most senior person you can find in the airport, and request feedback.

And there's a form you can fill out normally - when my bag went missing on a flight, I remember getting compensation - from Aer Rianta, maybe? So maybe the airport authority in Edinburgh will compensate you.

If people *don't* kick up a rumpus when their stuff is stolen, baggage handlers will thieve away to their hearts' content. But if everyone demands an investigation and compensation, thieving baggage handlers will be treated the same as any other thieves.

Security alert was on 10 August.

10 days later I flew home from Blackpool, there was a large board as you entered the terminal apporaching the check in desks advising of hand luggage restrictions, a minimum of 12 armed police officers on patrol landside/airside and I had to place my boots, belt, watch, money, and wallet through the scanner. I also had my wallet searched, and the camera I had with me was taken out of its small travel bag and checked.

I've since flown from Stansted, Heathrow, and Manchester, and faced similar scrutiny. I've seen fellow passengers sent back to check in hand baggage that was too large (hand baggage allowed was smaller than that allowed by the airlines) and others have cosmetics, toiletries, drinks, medication, and cigarette lighters all removed from them.

If you got through with prohibited items, somebody has not been doing their job.

p.s. judging by the airports you've mentioned, I'm guessing you flew with Ryanair each time. Did they not e-mail you advising you of the revised hand baggage restrictions through UK airports before each flight? They did to me.

The airport authority is not responsible for baggage delivery, the relevant airline is.

I have sent a strongly worded e-mail to Edinburgh Airpprt demanding an investigation,Aer Lingus said it had nothing at all to do with them.

therecklessone yes it was with Ryanair and nothing at all said to me and i did receive some e-mail but i usually delete them anyway as i really do not like Ryanair even though i unfortunately have to travel with them on occasions ,i expected it @ Gatwick for sure but no just walked through as normal.

I went to college in Edinburgh so flew back and forward a lot. One time I flew I had stuff nicked from my bag (by baggage handlers at Edinburgh) had been on a shopping spree that day and got new clothes, new shoes, my mobile, a discount card (relavent later) and my make up (what kind of a minger would wear someone elses make-up) totaled in or around 400 euro. Wrote loads of letters spent a fortune ringing around got nowhere. Reported it to the police they were crap. I had travel insurance at the time (with a UK company) and it was no use because it couldn't be proved if the stuff was nicked in Dublin (ROI) or Edinburgh (the UK) and if travel insurer people didn't know where crime took place I could not make a claim. But I know it was definitely taken in Edinburgh because I had this discount card called a "snapfax" taken from my bag it was only a small ****ty card that no one in Dublin would have looked at twice but it was really handy if you lived in Edinburgh saved you loads of money. Other Irish girls that flew back and forth had stuff nicked too got nowhere with the authorities. We all learnt the lesson put a big lock on you case but regrettebly too f-ing late I am still bitter and it was 3 years ago.
