Grappling Question???

    Hi Lads:

As most know I am Muay Thai'in it in thailand, doing an intensive one on one in mornings, and running etc.

I just join a weights gym 10 mins from my house...(some former Mr Universe from Oz owned it)...

anyway...I discovered in the gym there is a room and a lad from Italy teaches MMA in there. Told him I am doing the Thai, but want to learn clinch to ground.

He said I will teach me Greco for clinch, free style wrestling, and bjj for ground.

So am I on the right track??????

I aim to do 2 or 3 private lessons a week with him, aside from my 6 mornings of thai. I probably get better training in striking from the thais, so I want this guy to teach me 80% grappling to ground, and then help me integrate it into my whole game.

We spoke a good bit, and he seems to know his stuff based on things i have read on here over the year, and was a fit and hardy looking lad.

It will be all new to be, as I am years a striker, so I am excited as the prospect of learning this range, hell if I ever come home on a holiday or any of you guys come to pattaya, we might be able to have a "roll" and I can join in all this MMA fun I have been missing out on!

In general, I am training quite hard with the Muay Thai and that is Number 1 priority for me. (and a wee bit of combatives/krav maga gets reviewed on the quite on occassion still).

Any tips, ideas etc will be greatly appreciated.

and i will post my progress as I go along!

I hope to start this week.

Hey mate, sounds like you're on the right track. Myself coming from a predominantly striking background I found the hardest part of grappling to adapt to was not to go strength for strength but rather feel the opponent out for weakness, without a pun intendid - you gotta roll with it!

You'll learn the basics for a good few weeks I'd imagine, probably shrimping, rolling itself, passing the guard and bumping before you move onto side control, arm bars etc.
I began by trying to out do my opponent with strength, Ray Butcher who teaches me, loves that and any exerienced grappler will just hover over you - so to speak - and wait until you present them with somethin for them to tap you out.. well thats what happens me lol

No doubt you'll enjoy either way!

Hi Gerry, sounds great, enjoy it!

As Jon said, try if you can to avoid using too much strength, otherwise you'll tend to gas very fast, the fitness requirements are a bit different compared to doing a striking art. It won't take you long to get used to it though.

i will take it slow, and easy and handy, and ears open!

as Joey "The Lips" Fagan said in The Commitments after their first practice.

"Everyone give themselves a pat on the back....and remember Rome wasn't built in a day" ;-)

Too bad I have to work...all this work and business I am involved is gettting in the way of all this top class training on offer!!!! LOL!!!!

Remember man its the flow with the go, you just flow with it.

Enjoy it and just like every other range relaxing is the key!

    Peace
