Is it really true or common place that family are sending items like pasta out to British troops in Afganistan? Does it imply that the force has logistics problems or are stretched too far?

It does not imply any of those things. It is very common for troops overseas to get parcels of food items sent to them, mostly they tend to be luxury items just because one squaddie likes a certain type of pasta not available in Afghanistan doesn't mean that the Brits have logistical problems

This has been going on since WW2 at least, it's nothing new.
