    Which server?

The time has come with the office that we need a server for the following.

    1) Email and calendar events.
    2) Accounts and database tracking
    3) File sharing

The office even has a server cabinet and cat5 cables.

As I know nothing about servers and setup I need help.

What type of server and spec?

    What OS?

What software is currently been used?

    what database?

how much data is been stored?

how is it been backed up?

    what's the budget?

    blah blah blah

What are the recommedations/limitations of the package in terms of OS. Does it require a server? If so what OS does it recommend.

An entry level server running Windows 2003 Small Business Server will give you a reliable system, file/print sharing and Email (MS Exchange) with remote access and push email if required.

All servers should have driving mirroring, a battery backup and a good backup system.

The advantage of server is that you have one central location for company and private files, there is a central database of username and passwords and if the network is setup correctly you can go to any PC, enter you login name and password and have your emails, your files etc available to you.

if you have broadband you can have remote access to your files, emails etc

Also you will need to budget for a supplier who can install the server hardware, software, setup your network and if required provide ongoing support.

Where abouts are you located ?
