    hi

i was just wondering if anyone out there is or has applied for a certificate of freedom to marry for marrying abroad.
how long did it take to process?

i need one rather quickly .
im calling the department of foreign affairs tomorrow , but impatience is getting to me to find out quicker , i missed them a few times already as they have really short hours for discussing it.

    thanks in advance

I got one from the Dept of foriegn affairs back in December. Apparently, you are suppose to apply 3/4 months before you actually need it but the sorted mine for me in a couple of days. You need to apply to
    the Consular Section,
    Department of Foreign Affairs,
    72/76 St Stephen's Green,
    Dublin 2,
    Tel: (01) 408 2568
    LoCall: 1890 426 700
    Fax 01 478 5951

They will tell you what it is you need, as I forget, copy of passport and original birth certificate. Not too sure what else. I think it only cost 20 euros but it is only useful for 120 days so make sure it fits in with the date of marriage. Also, here is a link about getting married aboard, just to make sure that you have all the correct information and papers

    Hope this helps

I'm having a lot of trouble with this form too.

We plan to get married in Rome in a civil ceremony next march, but the new wedding registrar there won't take any bookings for non resident couples unless they have all documentation in order. The Nulla Osta is one document they require.

As Foreign Affairs won't issue this cert until 4 months before the date, that means we can't book our date yet.

It mighn't be a huge problem other than any local couples can already book our required date now, and for any other EU citizens the Nulla Osta can be obtained 6 months before the wedding date. So by the time the window of opportunity for our planned date comes along, it may have been well booked in advance. Rome is a hugely popular city, with only three civil ceromony venues, so we're pretty nervous.

The lady we spoke to in Foreign Affairs was really nice and helpful, and has said she will see what she can do, but it has us pretty worried. We have people intending to travel from the US and Japan, so we really need to give them a date!

The said the same to me and then they called 2 days later and told me to collect it. Don't worry about it, they'll sort you out. They're not a bad crowd up there in the Dept of Foriegn affairs
