Right - where do I go to get myself on the voting register? Is there a website? Postal address? Somewhere with info?

    Thanks a lot!

Someone from the council came around to my house a month or so ago, and updated the register. I presume that's happening nationwide!

Other than that, you have to get a form (which you can get from the local library and probably other places), fill it in, and give it in somewhere or post it off.

Now, politics aside, are there any advantages in not being registered to vote?;)

Can you do that? Just go down to the Garda station and apply there?

I got my self on the register yesterday and changed my family details as they had my mothers name spelt wrong as well as the family surname wrong.

Kerry County Council has a facility to check the register online see here you can check = to see if are on the register as I did only to find out I wasn't. This only works for people in Kerry but various other County Councils offer the same facilty.

Might be worth looking at also, cheers netwhizkid.

Politians look at the number of people registered to vote in a area/estate and tailor how much work they do for that area accordingly.

You won't get called for jury duty if you're not registered.

kilkennycoco.ie says I'm not on the register even though a guy came around and took my details.

The guy who came around to our house from Dublin Co Council gave us a form to fill out too as well as checking our details on the current list. He said we just had to stick it in the post once we'd filled out the details. Maybe you got something similar? It was a free post thing.

theres a big push to get people registered now so its probably easier. when i moved house i had to get a form signed and stamped by the gardai and then go to my local county council offices and leave it in with a girl there. the guy came and went in my area (oddly enough thinking that nowadays someone'll actually be in the house instead of working his ass off to pay the mortgage on it:rolleyes: ) but he did leave a self sealing form on which i put the names of the people eligable to vote and then posted it off.

at least i didnt need my passport this time :D

Why is it not an opt-out thing for voting? ie. once you turn 18, you automatically go on the register, and if you don't want to be on it for whatever reason, you opt out.

Woulda thought that would make sense!

How would expect the Government to know where you live?

Probably a timing issue - The register is only updated twice a year, so the odds are the update from the guy who took your details hasn't gone through yet.
