Mapping Joypad buttons

I have a ps2 USB controller adapter for using ps2 controllers on the PC.It works fine but the button layout for some games is all over the place. Is there any way of mapping the buttons differently?? Thanks

In the games options is best place to do it.

most games have control options, click secondary command box, then click whatever pad button you want,as oppossed to the default buttons like wasd.
