Is it frowned upon to join the Murder She Wrote society without any interest at all in the works of Lady Lanesbury? The wake sounded like great fun to me... Well, have to see their stand. If Angela's there I might be impressed enough to join. MIGHT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

yes? They did a lot last year you know. Console and lab gaming every week? Halo tournaments? Mario Kart Tournaments? Lans? Their own CS server?

And it'll be even better this year. :)

Probably going to join RedBrick for sure already an irc addict so another server of people to annoy :D
Was thinking of Games Soc but the flyer that said Console games Society kinda turned me off it :\ PC>Console and FPS>*
And Murder She Wrote Appreciation Soc sounded great =D cos I am reall interested in that programme really I am ;) *cough*WHISKEY*cough*

Any other Soc's or clubs u would recommend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

The flyer was just for the console event, not the society! Games Soc do loads for pc gaming, the lans and lab gaming were great last year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 RoB`

Sounds good =D what sort of PC games? any of the UT series? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

Yeah we had a fair bit of UT2004 at the last lan, was good fun.

Lab gaming will have Quake 3, Starcraft, and of course, Counter Strike.

Join Redbrick. You'll thank us all for it later.

Join Gamessoc and STOCS, then you'll be able to play every kind of game, from PC, console, and tabletop rpgs, wargames and boardgames.

Also, if you have an interest in anime or manga join AMS.

one of the things I notice about games he says are played on gaming lab is that non are big or new games. So I doubt bf2 would be played.
So I would guess bf2 would be played at a LAN like UT2k4 is.

What kind of PS2 stuff gets played?

Well I wasn't involved with setting it up last year, but I don't think the computers we have are up for it. We'll certainly look into it again though!

As for PS2 games? Pro Evo was very popular every week last year, but anyone can bring their own games along and they'll be played. Hopefully there'll be some Guitar Hero this year. \o/

I missed clubs&socs day last year and it was impossible trying to join anything afterwords :(

Anyone know a good sports club where you dont have to be any good at the sport to join? Does the tennis club like beginners? Thinkin I might like to give that a go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

Archery were pretty friendly to beginners. That said, I only went to once practice.... it was fun though!

Every year there are 2 Clubs and Socs says, so how did you miss 'em both?? Well anyway, here is something that freshers and others alike should note - YOU CAN JOIN A CLUB/SOC @ ANY TIME OF THE YEAR. Just pop up to the clubs and socs officer (Not quite sure if thats woh, I'll get back to ya) and ask to be put on a club/soc. Sometimes you get away without having to pay the €4 :D

By the way what's the Ultimate Frisbee club like? Im a huge fan of Frisbee and would love to join....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭Ferror

I'd really recommend joining the Caving club - having joined pretty much everything worth mentioning in first and second year, this is the one that's managed to stick!

You're always doing something fun/crazy, they're loads of drunken weekends away and some cute girls thrown in for good measure ;) + in the summer they even run trips abroad to places like the Yorkshire dales, France and Romania.

They're a really active club and go out every week too. Freshers always welcome and you can turn up to training at the climbing wall (wed 5pm) to get an intro to rope techniques.

View the badly hosted redbrick website to see more: http://jakarta.redbrick.dcu.ie/~caving/index.jsp

The other club i'd recommend is the Hellfish surf and sail club (formerly dcu hellfish sailing club), another really active club teaching sailing, surfing and windsurfing, with trips throughout the year too! They also compete against the other universities in Ireland which is always a great laugh. Check 'em out on clubs and socs day ;)

It REALLY is best to join on the first clubs and socs day as joining at other times in the year, while perfectly ok, messes up the club or society's funding allocation for that year, meaning they have less money to be spending on ye ;)

    That's not really true....

There are plenty of small societies in DCU that get huge amounts of funding and plenty of big ones that get hardly any (relatively).

All that matters is that the society is doing things relevant to their name, submit a proper request and show they've put some work into it.

Well I will be joining PokerSoc and Redbrick, I will naturally be avoiding games soc at all cost!

At least I have hair. :D

Don't worry Finch, we'll get you playing some other games. LAN wise is going to be slightly different this year, you'll just have to join to find out HOW different.

I'm sorry, how does this relate to my post on joining clubs 'n socs on freshers day, as apposed to joining during the year? My point was that by joining then they can request more more on their grant app form...

My point was that the number of members a society has bears almost no relation to the amount of money they get from the SPC. Join now, join later, it doesn't matter as long as they submit a good grant application.

Clubs are different because they have priorities which dictate (to some extent) how the money is allocated. Again, size isn't usually an issue there either.

The myth that big clubs and socs get more money than small ones is just that, a myth.

Hmmm, well i KNOW that it does matter for clubs anyway - being on committee for two of 'em. This is especially true with the new points system introduced this year.

Not too sure about socs but DO join a club on clubs and socs day if you think you might be interested. ;)

    But *new* games aren't cool!

Only graphically poor games that you can play on a pocket calculator are coool maaaan. Back in my day we didn't even have "screens", people acted out the role of a pixel and we were happy to have it!
