F:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.

Most DVDs that I burn seem to not work properly. They can be read by my wife's PC, but usually appear corrupt somewhere throughout or need to be re-read over and over for each segment.

On my PC, it's even worse. If I insert a burned disc and click on the DVD drive in windows explorer, I get the error message:
    "F:\ is not accessible.
    Incorrect function."

The puzzling thing is that not all discs turn out this way. Some work perfectly. I'm not sure yet if it's that the perfect discs are burned as ISO 9660 and the bad ones are UDF (usually 1.02). I don't want to waste all my blank DVDs testing to see what works. I always have Nero verify written data after burning and it never reports a problem.

I've searched google for the error, but almost all of the results are related to a Roxio EasyCD conflict or with trying to burn using Windows XP built-in thingy with CD-ROMs. Neither of these seem to be related to my issue, but I tried all suggestions I found anyway (like disabling the windows CD burning service - or rather enabling it and redisabling it, because it already was disabled). Nothing's helped so far.

Anyone have any advice for me?

My system (the one that burns the discs) specs are:
    Athlon64 3000+ (Venice 1.8GHz)
    MSI K8N Neo4-F
    1GB RAM
    NEC ND-3550A DVD burner
    Windows XP SP2
    Nero Burning ROM 6

All media I've used so far are:
    "Arita" branded "8x DVD+R" 4.7GB. Nero InfoTool claims they're "RITEK R03"
I almost always burn at 2x or 1x speed.

    Well this is explainable down to a few pointers;

    * The quality of the media can vary even in the pack, you can have good, bad and mixed quality batches of the same media especially if it is "cheap" media.
    * The quality of the burn is dependant on the drives firmware and the media.
    * RITEK R03 is a lower quality grade media that should only be used with certain writers that have firmware tuned for such media - though you can only do so much with crappy media.
    * Burning at the lowest speed (a common misconception) is often counter productive the dye in the media and the firmware are tuned to write the disc at its rated speed.

    So after all that do the following;
    * Change your media to something more reliable
    * Update the firmware of the drive and hope the burn quality gets better
    * Use a hacked firmware which is tuned to certain media to get better results.

If you have any more questions fire away.

Thanks for the help. Do you have any suggestions of reliable media? I think Taiyo Yuden are the best, but they're expensive and I'd be happy with something in the middle-ground.
My firmware is 1.05, NEC have a new firmware 1.06 for this drive. I'm going to install now...

TY is the best and cant be beat, as for cheaper stuff it's a bit of gamble with what you buy sometimes some media can be better than others.

If you know the media codes here are some suggestions
MCC (what Verbatim usually use, best one to go for if getting cheaper media)
    TTG0.. (varies but usually okay)
    PRODISC (varies but usually okay)
    DAXON (usually okay)
    RICOH (usually okay)
    MKM (usually okay)
    RITEKG05 (mixed bag)
    RITEKF01 (mixed bag)

    CMC MAG (stay away)
    OPTODISC (stay away
    INFODISC (stay away)
    RITEK (<-other kinds, stay away)
