Do you, like me, go for the Collector's edition/ultimate edition/double disc edition and pay more for it over the regular single disc affair only to watch the movie and not bother with all the extras?

I'm looking through my collection of DVDs and Games and I see countless special edition and collector's edition copies and yet I can count on one hand the number of special features discs I've watched?

    Am I the only extras-whore?

(Although in my case only whoring the ownership rather than the viewing)

I should point out I never buy the same movie twice because of different editions but if regular or ultimate were both on offer I find myself paying more for the ultimate..

I must admit i tingle when I see Director's cuts on the shelves. And im also strangely attracted to deleted scenes, although they are usually rubbish (hence the deletion :D )

Although i have never bought a DVD twice for the new "Ultimate Final Jepoardy Edition Now With One More 2 Minute Featurette About The Best Boy And Ten Euro More Expensive Than The Last Edition Which We Must Admit Was Very Ultimate But This Is More So (At Least Until The Next Edition)" version, so my collection still has a number of feeble but proud vanilla DVDs staring back at me, god bless 'em.

Shame on you!! You are single handedly responsible for the decline of Holloywood into thoughtless sequel producing drones because all creativity is sucked dry by leeches on torrents and dodgy outdoor markets.

Because of you we have to turn to foreign world cinema in order to fulfill our hunger for originality.

In short - Go DaveMcG!! :D

Most of the regular versions come with Extra, so if they're there, ill watch em, maybe

dont really buy DVDs for the extras, unless theres loads of deleted scenes. Like on the Resi 2 DVD

Sorry BlitzKrieg - I should have called it "Do you buy Special Edition DVDs for the extras or just to have them because you see the normal editions to be inferior?" :D

I'm sure you could start your own thread about what you described..

well...'ON TOPIC' I tend to buy a special edition depending on the film itself.

Most commonly films that are adaptations of another material tend to have nice extras.

Such as comic book and book adaptations where you'd find featurates about transferring the material over to film etc.

Lord of the Rings and Batman Begins were good for this.

Then there's boxsets and whatnot of films that have firmly established themselves. Were the features would be a combination of how the film was made and how it affected the industry. Films like The Omen, the alien series, scarface, easy rider etc etc. Tend to have such great features.

    What I hate:

Those aweful featurates which are mostly interviews with the cast and a basic outline of the plot, the sort that was made to promote the movie on tv, they're aweful and usually full of sh*t.

The single best extra feature I have ever had the honour of viewing (and I have harped on about it before) is the documentary that ships with the alien quadrilogy boxset. The single best ever about a single film series, simply because its the only one where I have seen the filmmakers say 'Yep, we f*cked up here, and here, and there." I find the star wars empire of dreams feature to be sickening garbage which makes me naucious when I watch it, for the very same reasons (they wont admit f*cking up).

I like extras, a good making of can be a great watch. Mind you, if I have a film already, I'll very rarely buy the next edition. The only time that's happened was for the Optimum versions of the Studio Ghibli, but then that's really only because the Buena Vista DVDs were awful, in the original Japanese the films were unwatchable because the subtitles were direct transcripts of the dubbed audio track, and seeing as the Disney dubs actually added a lot of dialogue, you could be watching the films in the original Japanese, and subtitles would pop up when nobody was even talking. Horrible experience indeed, but I'm very thankfull for the Optimum DVDs as they corrected this rather big problem.

But anyway, I certainly love a good documentary about a film, sometimes they can be as entertaining as the film itself, so I'll generally go for the version with the most extras. Sometimes they can be crap, sometimes they can be great.

Like Blitzkrieg said, Lord Of The Ring and Aliens were fantastic.

Does anyone else absolutely hate it when a thing is labelled a "Making Of" when it fact it says pretty much nothing about how the bloody thing was actually made!!

I liked the gladiator extras. Even normally tiresome stuff like the extras to do with costume and weapons were actually very well done. Comprehensively good

My name is LE and bought predator dvd again for the extras after buying the vanilla :/

definitly always looking for cool extras bought the ghosbusters and BTTF boxsets for them... love directors commentators

extras on Rocky were kewl too. Disappointed with king kongs first version.

my bro bought me Clerks X the other day which was okay not a huge fan of clerks but you have to watch the documentary on how it was made for pittance in somebodies sparetime to see why it amazing, and then see how it was spotted and developed. although the commentaries are great cos Jay doens't say anything.

also got Awesome I ****ing shot that by the beastie boys, they gave 50 cameras to the audience to film their gig at madison square garden but im not big fan of their grating voices, it was good not great they different edits of the show weren't that great although I havn't tried the dvdrom stuff yet. And then it had some some silly home movies that I just wasn't interestd or impressed with.

If I'm out to buy a film I'll always stick the extra few quid on for the one with the features. Used to be an avid DVD collector but now have to look into selling off the bulk of my collection cause of moving house.

Used to love the commentaries but have become too weary of them now. Deleted Scenes, Bloopers and a good documentary are what floats my boat. I also love screen tests when you can get them!

i'm an extra's whore to the max. to the point where i might own films twice over because of a box set :(

Only movie extra I've ever seen that would have been worth paying for was the documentary "We Stand Alone Together" on the Band of Brothers box-set so I'll rarely go for the 'supreme limited to 5 million copies turbo directors edition'...

I love extras! My mates give out to me because they come over to my house and I'm in the middle of watching a film with the director's commentary on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

I'm a bit like the OP, I like to own the special editions with all the extras but I rarely watch everything on the disk, unless it's a film I really love (the Alien Quadrilogy probably has the best extras ever).

It also depends on what type of film it is. I wouldn't really have an interest in watching the special features of a comedy, but in a sci-fi for example, I like to see how they do the effects/cgi.

As for commentaries, I can't sit through a whole film with one on. Usually I'll watch it and just look at my favourite scenes to see how they were done.

    I didn't vote...I'm kinda between option 2 and 3.

I love extras and watch most of them. The Director/Cast commantrys are normally pretty good.

If there's a Special/Collecters edition available I'll buy it, but lack of extras won't stop me buying a film I want.

I usually watch for the special editions as the extras are all moved to a second disc and the first disc has more room for a higher bit-rate film, and hopefully higher quality edition. Doesn't always work this way but a nice rule of thumb.

I just wish they didn't make up the word Quadrilogy...Tetralogy or Saga would have worked better for me.

But yes - a fantastic box set to have - read your post yesterday and sat down last night to Aliens. Just gets better and better.

When the hangar bay door opens to the silouhette of the loader Ripley is inside of: "Get away from her you Bitch!!"

    Classic Stuff.

if I buy a Collectors/Special Edition DVD I will watch a lot of the extras, mainly the Directors/Actors Commentry, and dabble in a few more of the extras, so it's not a complete waste buying them, and the covers are awesome too, that helps!

I usually get the extras-laden versions. But I'm a real sucker for metal cases! And I got the re-released unaltered Original Star Wars Trilogy DVDs, even though I have the 2004 boxset! The Alien Quadrilogy boxset really is excellent.

Good thing about europe over america. All the Star Trek boxsets here come in these huge plastic containers, they have cardboard containers in the US.

    HAHA!

(Yes I have tested hitting people with these containers...its fun.)
