Em, i'm kinda really lazy, and don't really wana be using google right now, so i'll ask you guys, and at a mild way of justifying my laziness, you're all learning by researching for me, so we all get something from this.
So here's the question/s, how does photojournalism work? Do you take a photo of let's say, the recent riots in town, and then go to a paper with it and sell it? or do you sign up with a newspaper with a salary or pay-per-photo kinda deal? Or do you actually take the photo yourself and write the article aswell?

Just curious, since i'm pursuing anyway of making money from my camera, plus i like writing, so that can help with the whole journalist thing.

Think you got to be in a union to be published, not sure but is it the NUJ??

you might get some work from the regional, local or or perhaps independant puplications, the national papers would probably only accept material from NUJ members
Freelance photographers can become NUJ members
here's the rates for the NUJ
Grade 1: €190 per annum (€15.84 per month)

    Provincial newspapers, books, magazines outside
    Dublin and independent local radio.

Grade 2: €240 per annum (€20.00 per month)

Press and public relations, magazines, freelances and
    advertising copywriters.

Grade 3: €325 per annum (€27.09 per month)

National newspapers, news agencies and broadcasting.

i suppose you could contact the major papers and see what the response is?

or maybe someone here will do it for ya :p

let us all know anyway so everyone can share ;)

In my very humble experience...as soon as you start doing it for money the fun takes a stroll out the door. Not the same for everyone...I know.

ring up the papers or whatever and ask them if they'd be interested in any of ur pics. always give them low res versions until you get paid coz if you give them high res they might steal it and you don't generally write the article you just take pics.

couldnt agree more... Nothing sucks the fun out of a hobby quite like doing it solely for money. I sometimes submit stuff to local papers if I happen to be somewhere there's something interesting going on but otherwise I couldnt be bothered. Selling the odd print will do :)

That's what i want, just enough to get me a few drinks on a college night out, ya know, i ain't planning on devoting much time to getting important shots, just the odd chanced ones like i got the other day...

If you're a student you can get a student press card for about €12. I know if you're studying journalism you have to get the year head to sign a form, so I imagine it's not as easy as just being a student... but I assume all the university magazines have some sort of access to a similar deal, so just start doing some work for your college publication.

varies, some shots nothing, some shots you get paid by the person whos whatever you shot, so if i shoot a band, the band pay me and they then submit the pic to the paper
