Does anyone know if widescreen monitors are worth the investment? What sort of benefits should I expect? I've been offered an Acer 19" TFT widescreen for €279.

Widescreen is nice for watching films and great for games that support it, such as Half-Life 2. Just make sure you have a graphics card that's able to pump at the frames quick enough at the screen's native resolution. Some games don't support widescreen resolutions, so you'll be stuck with either an ugly stretched image or black borders at the edges of the screen. Normally you can set this up in your display options.

Cool thanks. One more thing, do I need to be a certain viewing distance away from a widescreen monitor to use it properly (like a tv)? I plan to just have it directly on a desk in front of me.

No, it just like a regular monitor only wider.
