I'd love to start playing badminton again, but I'm unfit and would be a bit fazed going to a club on my own - for fear of showing myself up. My suggestion would be to make a point of inviting people like me on your flyers or whatever, I wouldn't mind if I thought there would be a load of newbies there. On the club competition side, we use a free internet based ladder website for our work table-tennis league, it might be useful for you:

(I don't work for them or anything, so use it at your own risk etc etc).

    How about an "American Tournament".

where you play mixed doubles matches, each person is given a number that corresponds to their name, each round you draw pairs so that the pairs are mixed up and you get points for wins, or the score in the game is the score you get. The people with the best scores get prizes, or top four i.e. top 2 women and top 2 men go into final.

It's a great way of getting people of various levels playing together, it's a great way of socialising and it's a lot of fun.
