Power City Coolock had 3 Samsung 32" HD CRTs in stock a while ago for €700. If they're still in stock, then worth a look. LCDs and plasma are great for HD but crap on normal channels. With this you get the best of both worlds, it handles 720p and 1080i. This is also a slimline model, a lot smaller at the back and the front panel is styled to look like an LCD shape.

    What's crt? I'm not technically minded.

On a similar theme, my son would like a 15" plasma tv for his bedroom for christmas, are there any you'd recommend or ones to avoid. TIA

This is a CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor, CRT is the technology used in most televisons and monitors.

What's crap about plasmas for normal channels and what should I look out for?

I recently read that in 2012 transmissions will be digital and analogue will cease across europe and current tv's will need a box or something like that. I don't want to end up with several tvs that are useless or that will need a box thing.

For a 15" screen, you can get an LCD, plasma are generally the larger screens. Both types are designed for high definition, which is split into two levels. These are 1280x720 [1280 lines across and 720 lines down] and 1920x1080 [1920 lines across and 1080 lines down]. Most of the tvs under 26" can't do either of these.
Television stations will mostly use the first of these levels, as they can broadcast two channels at this level compared to only one at the higher level.
So if you want a tv just for watching tv channels on, it only needs to be able to display the first level of HD, preferably carries a HD-Ready sign.
The second level of HD will start to become more widely available from Christmas onwards, with two new formats of players coming out: Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
Trust me, neither of these belong in Bargain Alerts for a while.
The Sony centre has a TV which can handle the second level of HD and I saw it displaying level 1 HD. It looked awful, with many small extra blocks appearing on the picture. Trying to stretch the first level of HD onto the number of lines in the second level of HD, the TV couldn't handle this adequately.
This is the same premise as trying to stretch normal channels [SD] onto a HD display. Until the LCDs and plasmas can handle each level with no noticeable issues, they're not worth the hassle.
If you still want a 15" screen for your son for christmas, the only reason to buy a flat screen is if space is the issue. Then by all means go ahead.
Ireland are going to be one of the last countries to switch off analogue transmissions, so you have six years for companies to make TVs that can handle all of these different levels smoothly, so buying an older CRT for now you can still own that for several years and call it a bargain.
