    Is the mic muted?

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices.

Under the volume tab (first tab) click on Advanced under Device Volume.

When it opens volume control go to Options > Properties and tick the Microphone box. It will show up then and you can see if it's muted or not (muted by default I think).

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the card? Has it always been like this or is it a recent problem?
