Not many clubs training in the city centre.

Tradition wise? At the beginning of the class most clubs line up in order of grade, black belts and one end, white belts at the other. They then bow and begin class. At the end you return to this line, usually kneeling and then bowing. Usually before beginning randori (sparring) you bow to your opponent.

Hope this helps you find a club.

Tradition wise, well its more or less like Nothingcompares said, except Portmarnock Judo where I like to say "if Carlsberg held Judo classes....."

ie, we retire to the bar for a de-briefing over ice cold pints of Corporation vodka (water......... ;) )

Yeah, kata exists in judo, don't expect to see it until I couple of months down the line at least.

And only for grading after your green belt. It won't be a major thing, I wouldn't worry about it.

I reckon Judo must be back in. I'm planning to get a bit of Judo going fairly soon!

I did kata for my oranage and I think yellow too. Could be wrong. As John says, usually no club has enough time to teach kata and teach the other parts of judo so usually, the kata is learned on the day of the grading or a class before. All of the different parts of the kata should already be known to the student but just putting them altogther and the choregraphy takes a while. If you really really really didn't want to do any kata you wouldn't find it difficult to avoid it. But it's there! Lurking!

I honestly learned my kata after i won all my fights at my black belt grading. Me and my coach both concentrated on just training for the fights and not even worrying about the kata.

While I was demonstrating the kata I was literally throwing my partner through the air and whispering 'whats the next one?' :D

Needless to say I haven't done any kata since...

Very unusual for any competitive club to do kata for more than half an hour... per year.

Coolmine judo club is in Dublin 15 behind the blanchardstown centre if your interested OP

As for clubs, Coolmine and portmarnock are good for an old scrap, Cabra is supposed to be good as well, Others are better to work on skill and Technique,

Im a bit of a Judo Whore, Ill train anywhere ;)

Same as meself Neil. You should try get in a few Lusk sessions on your travels. TOmmy's judo is currently "off the hook" (Mark Leonard 2006).

    Hey lads,

Good to see some of the Judo heads have managed to tape up their fingers enough to post here! And agree totally, the clubs' being promoted, Coolmine, Lusk and Portmarnock have to have the toughest and best randori in the country. Really high level coaching and competors and always extremely welcoming to anyone who wants to give judo a try.

Well done to all the irish player's at the Heart of England.

    Rob.

Traditionwise, we used to go for a pint on Thursday nights after training.

Well done to all the irish player's at the Heart of England.
