Some Poker Advice

    Hi,

I know ive posted a few threads about this but im trying to get to grips with this game. Only recently started playing about 2 months maybe less ago. Started off fairly well, got placed and won a few STT, done well in a few MTT etc but at the end of the day ive probably invested 500 euro so far and ive made no withdrawals even considering one of the MTT tourneys i played in paid out nearly $300.00

So as good as i taught i was, unless im winning its irrelevant. Although i know the main reasons for this loss, tilting, playing well above my bankroll eg $27 rebuy MTT's when i usually only lodge 100 euro a time. Also when i tilt and lose i find myself going into $50 STT or upping the ladder in cash games and blowing my bankroll.

Anyway, when im not tilting i actually play well, im very consistent in STT and reasonably consistent in MTT's, cash games are still a bit dodgy even when i play well i seem to a big win or a big loss so i stick mostly to STT'S & MTT's.

So i took some advice from other threads, ive decided to take a week out first and get that tilt out of my system. Ive ordered Harringtons 2 books and will read them back to back and when i go back to playing im going to keep strict records of every game i play how much my stake was, how much i won and lost, and keep comments of wheter i made any silly mistakes or played well. This should help with disipline, also im going to set a target that i must get above a certain target playing STT's before i can play a MTT. This should help keep my bankroll from getting eating up and also reward myself for playing well in STT which should in turn help my discipline.

Anyway i was hoping someone could point me to a good resource for calculating hand odds. Ive scanned over this when i started playing poker and decided to ignore it but i think knowing how many outs etc i have at certain stages instead of just guessing should help me make better decisions about what hands to follow or not. Im pretty good at judging a good hand and bad hand but i was hoping for a good website that goes into detail about the odds your hands is in several positions, eg early, late on the button, preflop etc and also a site that explains it well. The problem is there is so many websites about poker that the keywords pick up so many sites and i was hoping someone could narrow down the search.

Also btw i mostly only do $10 STT'S, 10c/20c Cash Games NL & $3-$12 MTT's if that makes any difference. My aim is not to be a pro poker player, just a poker player that withdraws more than he deposits. Im sure plenty of good poker players that have been in a similar situation when starting out on their career so any advice relevant is appreciated.

    Cheers

Here's a few good sites for odds, etc.

    http://www.homepokergames.com/odds.php

    http://www.planetstacked.com/holdem/odds/

    http://twodimes.net/poker/

http://www.pokerstove.com/ (The best one around for analysing hands IMO)

Also for keeping records, I'd highly recommend you get yourself PokerTracker url]http://pokertracker.com/[/url. You can get it free from these guys, http://pokerpromotions.net/ by fulfilling one of their bonuses. (Use one of the sites that you never intend on playing on, so you don't ruin your chances for RB on the site. I'd recommend the Bodog promotion (although with Jamie Gold promoting them, it might be a site to play on in the future, it all depends on how things work out with Gold and how they promote themselves, but for now, it's one of the easiest for this promotion.)

Word of advice, read book one first ... then play 100% to Harr's advice. Do not read book2 until you're consistently making money at the lower levels.

It is counterproductive trying to be too tricky or clever, especially playing online (more so at the lower levels). Just play ABC poker as described in Harr's Book 1 !

If you have very complicated simulations, the enumerate all takes too long and you should use the other one instead.

Thanks for all the info so far. Will try to follow the advice and hopefully start to make a profit from this. Its amazing that i hadnt played this game until 2 months ago and now i find myself completely addicted playing upto 10 hours some days. Im even dreaming about playing constantly :o so its going to be hard to take a week out but i know i need to.

    Cheers Folks
