old sat?

My gf recently moved into a new house. There was a dish installed when she moved in and one of the housemates got a digi box from a friend of hers (which had been working until she got it). I got asked to setup the whole thing which I didn't think would be too much of a problem - I've had a free to air system from lidl in my own place for a while now.

Basically the problem is that the box is receiving no signal whatsoever from the sat. I figure this has to be one of 4 things:

1> The sat is an old analogue sat
2> The sat is somehow turned off
3> the sat is broken somehow
4> the box is broken somehow

    1. The sat looks pretty new although it is quite large and certainly bigger than the sky mini dish. Can anyone tell me how I can quickly determine if it's got a digital lnb or some antique?

    2. Could there be a switch somewhere on the lnb?

    3. This could be a possibility

    4. This seems unlikely as it was working quite recently.

I'm pretty certain that it's pointing in the right direction by the way, at least close enough that it should be picking up some signal.

Anybody have any thoughts on what the problem might be?

If it is an old dish used previously for analogue then it would most likely have been aligned at 19.2 east for Astra 1.

Thus, the Sky box will not receive the channels on the EPG.
If you can get in to it, go to "services", "system setup" and "add channels".

    Then in the menu type in : 11836 H 27500 3/4
If channels such as ARD 1 and ARTE appear after searching(you can store and view them if they are there) then you know that you are on the wrong satellite and will need to get the dish re-aligned.

The same technique used with the frequency 11137 H 27500 3/4 will determine if you are pointed at Hotbird.
These are the two most likely sats that you are pointed at if not the satellite Sky is broadcast from, Astra 2.

Have a look at the the cabling and the connection of the cable to the LNB or the "head" of the satellite and see if that is all ok.
If it looks very rusted, it is possible water has gone into the cable or even the LNB rendering them useless.

Also check the connection to the box and make sure it is alright.
If you have to unscrew it and put it on a few times to get it right it could all make a difference.

The box sounds like it was in working order before and generally they last quite long. What make is it?.

The satellite being switched off as you say, would mean that the LNB was not on. This is the only part of the dish that is powered.

Of course, the satellite you have already may have been aligned to Astra 2 for Sky but could have been moved by wind or other factors.

Also the LNB may be 10,000 or 9,750 and may have no 10,600 for "high band"
A new LNB "Universal" type can be as little as 8 Euro.

If it is about 45 cm to 65cm eliptical across, of mesh it is a dish for Sky Digital. If larger 75cm or more then it was for something else. The dish will be fine for Sky digital if pointed correctly.
