Big transport companies (bus or haulage) in Ireland?

    Hi guys,

    I need to get in touch with some big(-ish) transport companies for some student projects I have. I've spent a couple of days searching and I've only found a couple that would have more than, say, 20 or 30 vehicles.

    Any suggestions? Bus or haulage companies. Just need to put some students in touch with some companies for some GPS projects we're doing.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks guys

    You could try the supermarkets like Tesco's etc.

    That's not a bad idea - waaaaay more than 20 vehicles. Thanks for that. Don't suppose you would have the slightest idea of who to call on that one. The bigger the company, the longer the telephone tennis lasts :p

    JJ Kavannagh's Bus Company in Urlingford Co. Kilkenny is pretty big. Sort of like the 'Ryanair' of bus services in the South and East of the country;

    Brannigans are a pretty large Haulage company in Kilkenny today...

    Thanks mfitzy. Kavanagh's was one of the few companies I've come across myself - they'd be ideal for what I'm looking for. Haven't heard of Brannigan's before, they look like a great find. Thanks a million for that one. If anything else springs to mind let me know. I normally find from organising previous projects that you never know how many companies you'll have to ring before you fill your quota of student projects.
    Thanks again

    City Link are pretty big:

    They should have a fair fleet of busses.

    And Iggy Madden are a pretty big Haulage company, not sure of the amount of vehicles. Think they are based in Galway. How about DHL and the likes of those also?

    That's great kippy. I actually live near Galway so I'd probably be able to drive out and meet them in person (always better than a phonecall). If you have any more Galway-based companies locked away in that fountain of knowledge of yours, by all means get in touch. Thanks a million.

    You're very welcome byrne! Another Kilkenny one is Walton transport;

    Another here is Bergin Transport, don't seem to have a website but no doubt they must be in the Golden Pages or something.

    Nolan Transport are very big too in New Ross. You see their trucks everywhere!;
    http://www.nolantransport.com/

    Ardcavan Coaches down in Wexford might be a possibility too;

    You're playing a blinder mfitzy. In fact, your work in the last hour versus mine over the last two days is a bit like comparing Kerry and Mayo at the weekend! (Poor old Mayo - what the hell happened?)

    Thanks a million, it's really been a great help. And if anything else springs to mind, don't hesitate to jot it down. Cold-calling companies about student work can be very hit and miss, so the more the merrier. Cheers.

    Not a bother. I'm afraid I can't really think of any other big ones (that would have websites at least!). A Transport and Harris Transport over in Athy (Kildare), I see them a lot on the road, probably small companies. Pembroke Transport in Carlow too, you'd see their trucks a lot. Waterford Transport is another that springs to mind! South Coast from Cork transport a lot of milk for processing to Kilkenny from Cork http://www.southcoast.ie/
    I would imagine it must be hard to get companies on board and give you their time. Think i'd let the students 'use their own initiaitive' and get them to make the contacts:D .

    My heart when out to Mayo and their fans BTW. What were they at? Completely not up to the game. Mortimer and McDonald are too worried aboput their bloody haircuts instead of playing football. Kerry were class, had to hand it to them. Was cringe-inducing to watch the first 10-15 mins..
    I constantly get stuck behind these trucks travelling around the place so they stick in my memory a lot!

    Be aware that the vast majority of trucks are owner-operated, even if they are in a fleet livery.

    Take a look at the lists here http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87618

    Great idea mfitzy, I should start paying more attention to the trucks I'm stuck behind instead of just ranting and raving at them :p

    You've been a great help mate. You're right about ringing the companies too - some of them can be very helpful but some are just up the walls with work and you just can't even get past the receptionist. Some woman at a bus company yesterday give me an earful when I rang - she just kept saying they were too busy with the Ryder Cup... I think she had aspiriations of being a caddy...

    Thanks again. I'll be keeping an eye on the thread for a while to come so if you get stuck behind any more interesting trucks, let me know.

    Cheers Victor, that's a great resource to have.

    Well there's Exel (who have since been taken over by DHL's parent Deutsche Post World Net) who have the contract for supplying Texaco's petrol stations and for Tesco's as well AFAIK. Tried a Google search but got directed to the DHL Ireland site but couldn't find much info. I know they have a big place opposite the Dublin Mails Centre in the Western Ind. Est.

    Used to have a contact number for the guy in Texaco, for a college project I had to do last year but can't find it now. The guy's name was Oliver something, best bet is to ring up Texaco and ask. He was fairly helpful with getting info but then my main aim was finding out about the tractor units themselves and what particular ones they used

    There's also Wincanton who have the contract for Superquinn and Statoil amongst others http://www.wincanton.co.uk/default.asp?Section=CO&Cat2=MAP&CountryCode=IR

    McBurny, Hutton transport, O Reilly transport are a few I can think of. Some mightn't have 20 trucks, but they'd be close.

    They have thousands of the things ;)

    If that's too much you could try Malahide Coaches www.malahidecoaches.com

    Thanks green_onions. I'll try and track the Exel guys down. If they're student-friendly that'll be a great help. I really appreciate the links

    Ha ha, I was wondering how long it was going to take someone to joke about Bus Eireann :D. I rang someone in CIE a few years ago... all I can say is that life's WAAAAY too short to be ringing government-operated companies...

    That Malahide Coaches link looks great - cheers. If anymore (non-government :p) companies spring to mind, let me know.
