    Hi,

I'm looking for a cheap & cheerful Motherboard/Chip combination & recommendation on where to buy.

The system will only be used for net surfing, some MS office, but nothing heavy at all. Anyone recommend anything ??

I already have a case, monitor hard drive etc.

    thanks

    Andi

A Sempron CPU should handle Office and net surfing without any trouble
    AMD Sempron 3000+ €49.95
    Motherboard* €65
    DDR2-533 256MB €25.49 (get two for 512MB)

*Motherboard comes with integrated sound, graphics with DVI, ethernet, USB, SATA/IDE etc.

Total €165 which is not bad plus you get some room to upgrade the CPU or graphics down the road if you want to.

Thanks for that - looks perfect for the job.

Does the fact that I connect wirelessly (via a USB2.0 device) to the router for internet put any more pressure on the system ?? - would I benefit from sticking a gig of ram on board ??

you might want to put one gig stick in there if you plan to ever migrate to Windows Vista.

Maplins had some sort of uber cheap deal recently with mobo and Celeron processor for about 100 euro.

Celeron would be a bit slower then the Sempron but for the tasks you described the difference would be negligible...
