    Hi all,

Sorry for abondoning the site for the past month or so. I moved house and had no internet access.

Anyway I signed up for vodafones 3G wireless internet and it's excellent. It costs €49 per month including VAT and has unlimited upload/download. It's almost as quick as broadband and that's up here in the mountains so I can only imagine the speed you city folk will get. Excellent sevice.... you can access the internet on your laptop anywhere you go.

    Recomend it to you

I know someone in Drogheda who has it but the speeds are pretty poor, about 350kbs......but Vodaphone are saying on their site that they should be up tp 5-6Mbs within 12 months

I use it as well - not near as good as decent broadband but a hell of a lot better than dial up. (a mid-way house I suppose) But when there's no hope for braodband in your area for the forseeable future, its acceptable.

Average sppeds seem to be about 250kbs when at the edge of a 3g area and about 350 kbs when close to the transmitter.

I was half thinking of getting this, is it a decent service, no dropped connections?

It's early for me to say no dropped connections (and I don't play online which is the big test). but so far I'm very impressed especially given my location

I work for Vodafone and have it. Its the business.

Not as good as broadband but useful if you want to play poker on a train or bus or maybe just connect to the net when you are travelling.

Can connect anywhere, even London and Spain. I get it for free so I think its the BOMB! (I dont say things like its the bomb by the way.)

Speeds only nice in 3G areas. See Map here http://www.vodafone.ie/live/3g/how/cover/index.jsp

Otherwise speed is a sorry GPRS 45kbps, much the same as dialup.

Anyone know how online play holds up over the GPRS connection?

delighted to hear that vodafone offer is decent. been waiting on broadband in letterkenny for last 4 months from a crowd called digiweb. don't have a phone line and don't want one so my options were limited to them . It is without a doubt the worst customer service I have ever come across. Impossible to speak to a human being there and the last couple of months impossible to even leave a message. had heard about the vodafone offer but was told that as there's a download limit it might not be the best for playing poker -given the long stretches you tend to be online for.....anyways am definitely gonna go for it now....

Have you contacted Clearwire? Pretty decent in the Carlow area and I thought they were in Kilkenny too.

The downloading required with online poker is very low. The software is generally sitting on your machine and just the card info and player decisions are passed over the net.

That's why even on a phone line it plays fine (ASSUMING  it was a rock solid connection) provided you have the software installed (from a cd or something).

I have used this whilst observing people playing online in an effort to improve my (admittedly still terrible) online game. If the other person discusses their thoughts on how the table is playing and when and how they plan to take advantage it can be pretty educational.

It's not like its something you can do when observing good players in a casino. I haven't used it for collusion but it would be pretty easy in fairness and is something to bear in mind when playing online.

Olly, you might want to check your post there. Just because something is in Kilkenny, doesn't mean it is in Letterkenny too. Bit of a distance between them.............

VN, is there really no cap on up/downloads for 50/month? It seems to say you pay per KB on this page.

Call into a vodafone store and chat to them. I believe this is a new offer with unlimited up/download for €50 per month (I hope so because I'm using it night, noon and morning). Signal strength, connection, speed etc. seem fine.
