I have a Toshiba Portege 2010 (12.1" LCD) with a dead backlight. Does anyone know if you have to buy a model specific backlight or can I just buy any 12.1" backlight (are they all the same?)

    Thanks in anticipation:)

backlight's are pretty hard to replace...I think you need to look on ebay for them...don't know of anywhere that sells them...

You would also want to be sure that it's the backlight and not the inverter (the yoke that powers the backlight)

Thanks. Actually had thought it was the inverter initially as it was just dimming. Replaced the inverter (E80!) and didn't change. Now the light is gone altogether! So yep, defo the backlight.

I had a problem with a guys laptop is was fixing. done a bit of research, didn't actually do anything about the problem in the end but i read somewhere you can buy those case mod lights, they the same bulbs and hook them up. Only problem is getting the size, 12" would be difficult to find i would imagine

What do you mean "case mod lights" can I ask?

i have actually replaced a backlight in a screen its not really a cost effective job unless your time isnt charged but its fiddly and the service manual is usually useful to show you where the bits go (ibm has them on its website)

they are pretty cheap heres a dell one

    good luck if you try

Thanks for the links. The backlight that you replaced, did you replace it with a genuine part, a model specific generic part or just a plain replacement tube?

errrr actually someone gave me a screen but it had the wrong connector but the right size so i stripped out the tube (yeh i know i have way too much time on my hands but an interesting technical exercise) when i put the old screen back together the tube was slightly too big so it wasnt perfect (the light distribution was slightly uneven) but my mate was happy enough so yeh i'd try to get the right tube if i did it again
stripping down the screen and getting the light in and out was pretty difficult too and i never got the old screen back together.
