I’ve been using www.LogMeIn.com for years I find it excellent for simple tasks like getting files from my home pc, or helping family and friends when they have computer problems without having to go to them to fix it. I use the free version as it covers most of my needs but there is one feature I would like which is on the pro version that you have to pay for. It has the ability to send an email to a user and remotely control their system after they click on the link – it installs the software in the background automatically. At the moment I have to talk them through adding the account under my username which is annoying and doesn’t always work.

I’m told there are many other options available on the net and was wondering if anyone knows a better option which can do the same, for free.

Yes there are loads of VNC's available. Google VNC and you should come across a few ;)

if i were you tho, just make note of a hack/trojan called oagain.exe effecting many VNC's. see here for more details on it.

RealVNC is the preferred one for me. Has pretty much every feature you could need in the free edition, and pro includes encryption and NT authentication (which you probably don't need). 'Tis great!

well if they have windows xp pro you could just enable remote desktop or else take a look at Remote Administator.
