Invisble RAM?

In the system panel of my PC the total RAM was down as 256mb. When I popped it open there was 512mb. I removed one of the 256mb sticks (this made the computer freeze) and inserted a new 512mb stick and it still reads as 256mb in the control panel. Any idea's on what's going on?

Hi Ruu, It's an Acer 1670 (which makes me realise that this thread wil probably be moved!). Yes, I've checked the RAM and it's all the same type.

some of the older computers had a max 256mb ram per slot.I have a p2 500 and it has 256mb but only reads as 128mb.

Its a motherboard limitation thing. Is your computer p3?

    regards

    kieran

    It's a P4 3.00ghz, so it's pretty modern and powerful.

try each stick on it's own in each slot, and when you reboot go into the BIOS and save changes

on very old systems you had to put the slowest RAM in slot 0 as that's where it took it's timing from

also http://www.cpuz.org to down a utility that will tell you the make and model the RAM claims to be
