I'm kind of a virgin at this stuff but spent an hour in the garden this afternoon and here are two from the session. Sigma 70-300 5.6 which only does 1:2 so they are well cropped, the first one is anyway. Hmm the bug is beginning to bite. Punny eh?

Click on the pictures to go to Flickr and see them bigger if you dare :p

The spider has some mental bokeh going on in the background, it's almost like fireworks going off in the garden :) I like that for the colours alone, spiders freak me out though ;)
I'm not totally mad about the second one, there's nowt wrong but it just doesn't seem to have the same punch due to the lady bug being immersed in the foliage and not discreetly separated from the background like spidey is.
Did you use flash on both?

Thanks Roen. I feel similar. No flash. That was a brief glimple of the sun.

    Clash macros, really.

I wouldn't say no flash, it was definitely needed on spidey. I'd say he would probably have run to a near silhouette if you didn't use some fill in. It's very well balanced with the background. I was just wondering cos I never used any on my macros (too scared to be honest).
Love the spider one by the way, should have said earlier.

Spider one is great apart from my fear of spiders... :o

The second one could be improved with a tight pano crop I think. Both the red colour and ladybird itself are lost in the green. The pano crop would reinforce the colour and insect!

Thanks Faj, I'll give the pano a lash.

Roen: There was no flash used on the spider. The sun was shining directly on him and on the bright berries in the background. I never even thought about the flash to be honest.

very nice shots, the background is indeed mental in the spider! I quite like the ladybird too, well done!

Macros kicks ass. Spider is very cool, especially the background. The ladybird is technically very good, but a little boring.
