    Really unusual and annoying problem.

Just recently pen drives and devices with removable storage have stopped showing up in my computer!. The system recognizes the fact that their there and I can see them in device manager but bugger all shows up in my computer which means i can't access them.

All other USB peripherals are working normally, mouse, modem etc, my printer has a memory card reader inbuilt which won't work but the printer prints as normal!!. I have uninstalled every USB controller in Device manager and allowed them to reinstall on boot up with no joy.

Anybody have any ideas, because this is beginning to do my head in.

    Thanks in advance.

The only thing that comes to mind where I had the same problem as you was when I changed the drive letters in the system which resulted in a conflict when I plugged in the USB memory stick.

It would show in the device manager etc but not in My Computer, the solution was to change the drive letter of the USB stick in the drive management console (control panel->administrative tools->computer management) then after that it showed up again in My Computer.

something similar happened to me recently when i installed Daemon Tools ...
it seized drive letters that had previously been associated with usb keys.

have you recently installed something like daemon tools or alcohol 120% ??

i'd take 8T8's advice on the MMC

Yeah Trout, I did installed Daemon tools recently but have uninstalled since this problem came to light.

8T8.. Thanks for the info I'm able to access one of my pen drives from the computer management console now but not from my computer. The card reader in the printer comes up with the following error message

"the operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or volume , restart the computer."

obviously I've restarted several times but it remains the same.

Also when I rename the drives they don't seem to save when I reboot and I have to go and rename them again. I'm a bit of an idiot regarding things like this!, am I doing something wrong?. What are removable usually called ( A, B or C etc. )

Once again thanks for you help folks.

Sounds like Daemon tools screwed you :(

I steered clear of that program so have little experience troubleshooting it, if it was the cause of the problem you may want to try asking on Daemon Tools own forum if you make no further progress here.

Removable drives generally are a drive letter assigned after the number of hard drives, CD drives etc.

    So if HD = C:
    DVD = D

Then the removable is usually any free letter after that, try setting the removable drives at the bottom end like w,x,y or z.

As towards the error message it generates I'm not sure I seem to recall once seeing an enable command once in the context menu when you right click on the disk 0, disk 1 bit etc. You may need to insert media into the card reader beforehand to make any changes.
