Salary: €20,000 - €30,000

    Hi,
    Just looking at a few jobs on irishjobs.ie and there's one I'm looking at which says a salary of 20-30K. There's a BIG difference between the two and the job is pretty basic, as in, there wouldn't be a 10K difference between one employee to the next, surely. I'm just wondering is this info inputted by the employer in text or if it's a drop down menu and they have to choose 10-20/20-30/30-40 etc?

    What it means is that they are prepared to pay up to 30,000 if someone quite qualified for the job goes.

    Say you go for the job and you have a degree. Well if that is the min requirement they might say, ok we will pay you 22,000, because that is about what you would get anywhere else with that degree.

    Now someone else comes along with a masters, they would go, ok we will pay you 28,000 because that is about what you would get some where else with that masters

    Then someone with a masters and 2 years experience comes along, they say we will pay you about 30,000 because that is about what the market rate is for someone with a masters and 2 years experience

    (I'm just making these figures up, no idea what the market rate actually is)

    Say the top to people pull out, and you are the next in line for the job. They aren't going to pay you 30,000 to do the job, even if you are the only one left. They are still only going to pay you the 22,000, because that is all they need to pay you to stop you going somewhere else. They don't need to pay you 30,000 because you wont get a job for that amount anywhere else, where as the experienced masters guy might.

    Probably the range of pay scale for the job, coupled with experience as Wicknight pointed out.
    You'll get gradual increases the longer you're there (and the more experience you build/the more useful you become).

    So 30K may be the top-end of the payscale for that position.

    Discuss money if and when you're offered the job.

    No, they would not have decided what you are worth until after they have interviewed you.

    They might ask you in an interview what salary are you looking for, to make sure they don't offer you more than you would be happy with. Its always a good idea to make that a little higher than what you would actually be happy with. If you would be happy with 25k say you would be happy with 30k.

    When (if) they offer you the position they will attach an actual fixed salary in that offer that will be between the original higher and lower amount (maybe even higher if they really want you), based on what they think you are worth paying to get.

    If you think that is unfair for your experience or qualifications you can either turn them down flat out, or say that you would be very interested in the job but the pay level is too low and ask can they make a better offer. They will either say "no sorry, thats what it is, take it or leave it", or go away and come back with something else.

    From my experience on irishjobs and if it was an agency who is advertising I would suggest its lower end of the those figures.
    If its the employer direct I would suggest theres a salary band for the role and as other posters have said it will depend on the candidate.

    Imagine you worked in the place now and you saw the job advertised at 30K and you were only getting 24K...you would be pretty pissed ! They are just covering their arses.

    Actually, i think it's a drop down menu, for instance if the pay is 24k, they just choose 20-30k..... I never apply for a job on Irishjobs unless it states what the salary is anyway.
