Cd drive on the blink

Have a Dell Dimension 4550. All of a sudden, the cd drive isn't reading cds. It doesn't even seem to be trying - usually, it might have been a bit slow but at least you'd hear it rippin away! Now though when I throw in a cd, I get one or two tiny grunts from it, and that's that. It doesn't read the cd and if I double-click on the cd drive, then the window opens but is empty.

I have a second cd drive connectd through the usb and that is still reading cds fine. So I presume then that this isn't a software problem and instead is a hardware problem with the other drive? Or might it still be a software problem? Any ideas how I might solve it?

Unlikely to be a software problem if the other drive is functional, optical drives just dying like that are a very common occurrence I'm afraid.

What you could do is double check or replace the IDE cable for the drive to make sure it's not that or try updating the firmware of the drive. Last but not least test the drive in another PC.

But given the cost of DVD/CD drives is so low these days it would be a lot easier/quicker to just replace it.

Cheers, will prob just replace it, cos even the other one is unreal noisy and a bit moody as well!
