No Stand Up Skills

    Having done kickboxing for 3 years, and never gotten out of the habit of ducking my head when punches coming at me, I went to jits and found something i could see myself improve in and get confident in.

    I do realise though, the importance of having at the very least, adequate stand up skills and was thinking of joining thai boxing, which a lot of our jits guys are doing. Howver, I wonder am I just wasting my time, if i should just accept that on the feet is not for me. Jits has given me a confidence that I enjoy, and should I just be happy to have that? ( being as though I am never gonna do the door, work security etc ).

    Thoughts?:confused:

    Do your stand up and train it hard. Go with your own style and learn to work the best possible way you can.

    Some people are good coming forward, some are good on the counter, some have fantastic head movement and can sit in the pocket all day and never get touched.

    Find your own strategy that you can work with and train with all the passion you can muster.

    It all depends on what you want to get out of training. If you just want to do Jits as a recreation/hobby, or even to compete in Jits, then theres no real need to do stand up. However, if you would like to compete in MMA events, then yes you will need stand up.

    Satisfied? Maybe. You'll always regret the times you "failed" way more than the times you didn't try.

    If it's a challenge you want to overcome, definitely go for it.

    Of course, you might never be the best stand up guy out there. Most people can't. But whats worse is most people never even come close to reaching their limits.

    Was that a freebie colm or is his invoice in the post? If you want to be a fighter you need to learn to fight in all three ranges. Not everyone can be elite in all 3, most will always have their favourites. I hate stand up striking but I practice it as much as possible because it's essential. Even for mmaleague calibre fighters.

    if you want to learn stand up (which is what I do mainly), just start slow and build from there. In my experience it can take 1 - 3 years to get a passable level depending on your level and dedication.

    Hey,

    I had another read of your orginal post and came to this conclusion:

    You don't really like the striking range (kickboxing etc.) but you do really enjoy the ground game (BJJ). This can be for 2 reasons. You've immediatly appreacited the potential for improvement in BJJ with the correct training methods and feel like you can improve with time. However, you may not have found this in the kickboxing. Maybe it's because you weren't thought in a way that allowed you to improve? Or maybe you're just not a natural kickboxer. More importantly, the overall impression is you're really enjoying the BJJ and not that much in love with kickboxing.

    So I would think the best thing to do is keep training in the BJJ. You're training for enjoyment and possibly fitness and you've told us you're not preparing for Security work. So I think it's ok to just do what you enjoy and not do the stuff you don't enjoy. Maybe in 6months when you've gotten to a standard in BJJ you're happy with (of course, your jitz can ALWAYS be improved) you might return to cross training and taking 1/2 nights a week in Thai boxing.

    If you train in SBG perhaps do a few mma classes to make sure you're happy to just stick with the BJJ.

    Get down to a few Thai classes and see what you think, before you decide it's not for you. You might enjoy them.

    I've been getting down to Muay Thai with Paddy Clint at SBG Rathcoole as often as I'm able. It's hard to juggle it ever week with still doing jiu-jitsu or the MMA classes, but I feel like I've learned a lot. Still got lots of bad habits to iron out, but seems to me that training can only help that.

    do you want to develop stand up skills for self defense/competition/mma events?

    I would say that jits is great as once you've been to the ground you lose all fear of it and that factor makes you far more successful at stand up.
    I believe both ares to benefit each other and help make a more well rounded "fighter".
    So with that in mind do take some stand up classes...
    We are all flawed in some area of our training so if you know what those flaws are great you can work on them....and don't forget you have even more than you know so you constantly need to improve...as we all must.

    So get your backside to a muay thai gym or whatever you decide on for your stand up training and give it a go...don't forget to enjoy...

    If i was you i wouldnt bother my hoop training thai, cos if i ever get my hands on you i gonna chuck lidell you into next year :)

    get down to micky D's and give it a go sure you cant get any uglier :)

    I started thai two weeks ago in the community centre just beside the leisure centre in loughlinstown. It's handy being so close to each other so I can do some muay thai and then head up to fight class. There's a fair few NG lads down there now, about 5 or 6 regulars.

    id do a bit of both worlds if i wer u, if ur in dublin id get my arse down to john k places lovely guy and great person to be training with. they do thai boxing in there aswel i think.

    of all the people i hoped wouldn't read this post, you were one. sorry to destroy your image of me, I know I'm your hero, but despite what you think, I'm not perfect. :D

    Colm O' if you are as positive in your advice in other aspects of life, perhaps I could arrange an appointment, have a lot of personal issues going on. :)

    i would put myself in the same boat...possibly even worse...
    Im gonna join an mma club soon(in the next week) and I can tell you before I join that my stand up SUCKS.....ground and pound is what I like the best.
    Anyway its something that I will really work as just incase you meet another wrestler
