Comag SL 55 + PC Hook Up

    OK Guys
I'm looking for some info on how to hook up SL 55 to PC. I downloaded 2 different software trials to test / evaluate. I can connect to PC with one, but it can't read info off receiver and eventually times out. To use the second piece of software I need to set the receiver in "upload" mode....this setting is not available on receiver, so I'm guessing this is for a later firmware version. I thought I'd better check before flashing receiver. receiver is as it came from LIDL.
The original idea was not to flash the receiver but to edit channels and update channel list rather than imputting frequencies individually.
I've read all I can find on net
Any help from someone who has accomplished this would be appreciated.

    Regards
    t

Are you using the correct cable to connect to the PC? I believe that it should be a null moden cable.

This software you are trying to install, is it legtimate or is it one of the many firmware hacks for the Comag that give access to other pay channels? If so, then you will get no help here.

Found a website on which the update process is discribed.
Couldn't find any hacks on it, nevertheless since this is a bit edgy I sent you pm.

Firstly let me thank you guys for responding. From your posts I see now why people were slow coming forward. The possibility of something dodgy going on,..completely understandably.
BUT if you re-read my post, My intention was to avoid typing transponder codes into each receiver (only one installed here at present with 2 or 3 more in boxes and 2x sister-in laws). The only reason I mention flashing was I thought that might be a necessary requirement if First piece of software didn't work. I barely looked at second piece of software as the option needed wasn't in menu on receiver. The software I used is fully legal TRial version ( allow 20 uses) and can be bought for € 10 or €15 full version. I'll post the name if anyone wants to check that out. The other thing is, you can call me naive if you like, I thought (at least up to now) that all flashing the firmware did was enhance the operating menu and was quite legal. The only danger I thought was invaluating the guarantee. Judging from MJSMYTH's post there is obviously more to it than that.
All I want on the box is the FTA channels. I have Most of them on the cable as well ( hense receivers still in boxes) .I need to keep cable 'cause 24 yr old kid wants ch4 and E4. But as soon as he leaves the nest..bye bye cable
If I caused any mis understanding or offended anyone I tender apologies.

    regards

I find some of the programs that do serial to Setbox only work properly on Win98, not on NT/Win2000/XP

There are a number of programs available for channel listing etc, but in my experience, not all of them work (i.e. with the original SL55 firmware). Try the one from Comag or Starsat (sometimes found under STB5518) for uploading the settings and listing from your SL55 first. I've had no problems with anything under Windows XP.

Oh, and the null modem cable is what you need. Just connect from the COM on your PC to RS232 port on the Comag.

Ah.. again some SW doesn't work with USB serial adaptors (actually electronics in the plug, not just a cable). Most will.

Then you plug in the regular "null modem" cable into the USB serial adaptor.

yep, that's the cable set up exactly, will let you know how I get on after "youngster" takes a look. Anything to avoid all that typing (transponder freqs).
Tell me this, Does STBs that have a "blind search" mean that all transponders on a satellite are found, and don't have to be typed in to settings before search

    Still learning

Very few receivers have a blind search. Also not a speedy thing. If you have broadband then Tele-Satellite World of Satellite and satcodx is the way to go.

Blind search popular for feed hunters, but a Promax test set might be better for that. I have a loan of a 3C premium for a week... Yes, Blind search does what you think it does.

I'm looking for a blind search receiver with Ethernet.
