Hey I was just wondering, as I'm only going to be 17 starting in DCU(not 18 until March 2007 :(), will I have a hope in hell of getting served in the pubs on Campus or even be let step inside the door??

I really hope they are not too strict as I love going to the pub and don't want to miss out on all the drinking!!

I'm not joking, it sounds like you have a problem.

To answer your question, they tend to be strict, particularly around events, they have been raided by Gardai, you will need a Garda Age Card as well as your student ID. So you'll have to just go knacker drinking or sort out your alcohol reliance before you turn 18.

well then i have a problem to :P

    deisedolly: you'll be fine :)

Afaik, they check Student ID on teh door.

Though I haven't been in there much, so I'm not a reliable source.

During the day you'll probably be ok, evenings would be risky, and events would be practically no chance.

True, in fact they usually ask for two proofs of age at events so any underage people would do better to save their money and wait.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 887 ✭✭✭Rockerette

does your student ID have your DOB on it yeah?

so you need that and also the Garda ID?
Is the whole point of the Garda ID not so that... well, that alone does the job..?

aah well, it doesnt affect me really, i'll have both.

    Poor Deise!

Ah deise, I feel sorry for you. All you can really do is head into the bar before the bouncers come on duty. Then stay out of their way.

Try getting a fake provisional license. They are onnly a tenner.

fecks sake. this thread has ruined my joy.

"During the day you'll probably be ok, evenings would be risky, and events would be practically no chance."

    sigh.

Settle down, ye come from Coolock for God sake! You have plenty of places to go knacker drinking - The field near the astroturf, the stardust memorial and if you look good in a skirt (applies to girls only) you can go hit the blacker...

Alot of people had this problem in first year but the thing to remember is that the bar is not the only place to drink on campus. Alot of people, whether they lived there or not, drank in peoples houses on Res. You'll meet people in your course who will be living in there so start in there and then move on into town. The only time it will affect you is the "Balls" in DCU which are all Over 18s. This means you'll probably miss the Freshers and Christmas events, if the latter happens, but you'll still be ready for Rag Week (I think) and definitly there for the Summer Ball. :)

There's an 'Orientation Ball' next week, will I miss that aswell?? That's not really fair is it :(
They're really strict in Waterford City about I.D and yet I've still managed to get away with going to pubs and clubs since I was 16...

Do they ask every single person for I.D or just people that look young??

This is really making me not look forward to going :(

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

They've been really strict the last couple of years for the first semester (because of underage first years); I guess you may as well chance your arm getting in, never know, but I wouldn't bet on it.

It's a bit of a joke alright, but how many people would attend a strictly non-alcohol event? You can't really blame the bars; college bars are at the highest risk of being shut down for allowing minors in due to the very nature of those they're servicing (young people).

Having said that, I was 19 starting first year, so I never had this problem :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 887 ✭✭✭Rockerette

i know its easy for me to say.. but as CuLT said, you cant really blame them for being strict, you are underage, and if caught they'll be the ones punished..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

And we'll all suffer as a result, so wait the 3, or 4 months, or risk being the target of 7,000 other students anger at having no bar because you couldn't go without a drink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭Zen 2nd

7,000 students versus 3000, now if only they had Helms Deep they may survive. I myself am 19 and I do feel sorry for all those people who are underage but there is nothing that you can do,you'll just have to wait. Also I don't drink myself, a lot of people find that odd though :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 887 ✭✭✭Rockerette

in fairness as someone said up there ^, you can still drink wherever youre living, its not like your life has to be alcohol free if you dont want it to be..

head into town then, and you'll be sorted!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 Katieface

erm okay so are my plans ruined too? I AM 18 but the guards are idiots and my age card hasn't come yet :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 887 ✭✭✭Rockerette

i can onlyassume you'd be fine?
cos not everyone has the garda ID.. or do they?

yeah it took about 10 weeks for me to get mine..

use your passport or driving licence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭Cy_Revenant

Or the receipt you got when you paid for your age card.

iirc Thats as good as an age card till yours arrives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

Wouldnt count on that for most places, including the DCU Bar since the trouble. Passport for the win tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 Katieface

long story short about the passport, it got stolen so i have to wait ages to get a new one. oh well i plan on doing most of my drinking in fibbers and i was told "those things on your chest will be your ID" so yay!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭amen

    how times have changed
I was 17 in first year (1990) and about 80% of the class was under 18 and never had a problem getting drink at the balls!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭Micko23

yeah, but how many students were attending dcu in 1990 - probably not enough for the gardai getting involved with college events.

How many students are in DCU now anyway? Ive heard its around 10000 including all courses.

sigh. its not the booze thats the problem so much as the orientation ball etc, if even just for getting to know fellow first years..
maybe if i cross my heart hope to die that i wont drink they'll let me..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭BOHSBOHS

they are really strict these days whenever their are events on , and chancing your ARM as has been suggested is very risky thing to do ,if u value ur college place ,they are very jumpy since the raids and have booted students out of college for drink offences , wait till u hit 18 mate ........ but u can go in any day theres no "events on" , no bouncers on then :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭bazzman

you have to have ur student card wit ya to get into the pub on campus. u pay €12 for the year and they put a special stamp on ur student card to show ur a member.
so really if ur under 18, the only chance u have if gettin in is to find someone who might look like ya and use theirs!!!!!!!!!!!
